Painting your Cohasset home’s exterior:
The houses in Cohasset span a wide range of architectural styles – we’ve helped to maintain all of them. We’ve painted some of the earliest surviving Cohasset residences built in the 18th century, Italian Renaissance styled villas and ornate Victorian homes dating to the 19th century, many Cape-style houses constructed after WWII, and more contemporary homes as well. Each of these has its own particularities and we’re well-versed in all of them.
There are many homes in Cohasset that boast beautiful and expansive ocean views along the rocky coast. With these views comes exposure to harsh salt air and wind-driven rains, which will wear down exterior coatings faster than inland homes. We use paints and stains specially formulated to better hold up to these conditions and provide a more lasting paint project in Cohasset.
While most Cohasset exteriors are constructed with wood, we also have experience with stucco homes, modern composite siding materials such as James Hardie or Boral, and the less common aluminum or vinyl substrates. No matter what the exterior of your Cohasset home is made from, we have the experience and knowledge needed to coat it properly.
“All-white” homes are fairly common in Cohasset, but a number of our clients, even in older homes, are opting for subtle grays and other shades for their home’s exterior. Historic colors are our specialty as we’ve painted many antique and date-boarded homes throughout the South Shore and Boston area. We can also work with the Cohasset Historical Society to try to find an original color for your historic home, or our color consultant can help you to choose a new shade to change it up (it’s a complimentary service to all our clients).
Weathered and gray cedar shingles are a traditional Cohasset look, but many of our clients opt to have them coated with a semi-solid or solid stain for a more uniform look and to give more protection to the cedar siding from Cohasset’s salt-air.
Exterior colors in Cohasset are generally historic in nature. We have developed a nice relationship with the Cohasset Historical Society to help you choose colors that are historically accurate, even if your home is newer.
Mahogany decks are typical to many Cohasset homes. To keep them looking their best and to protect them, decks should be coated every 1-2 years. We usually suggest a translucent oil stain for the richest possible finish. You can read our guide to maintaining decks and porches for more information
Painting your Cohasset interior:
Choosing interior colors can be a daunting task. Our color consultant provides a free consultation to all painting clients as part of our projects. They’ll schedule an in-home visit to best choose the right colors for your style and furnishings.
Small store paint chips are not large enough to help you decide on a color. We can order you (free!) 8” x 8” color samples from Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams. Just email us at [email protected] with the colors you’re thinking of and we’re happy to mail them to you for free – even if you’re doing the project yourself. We always suggest larger samples of actual paint in the rooms, in the sheen and color that you’ll be using. It’s best to do this yourself in advance of the painting project, so you’ll have time to see the colors in different lighting and make sure it’s just right. We can also brush on large paint samples on the first day of work before painting the whole house. It makes a lot of sense to spend time getting the color right upfront.
Older and antique homes in Cohasset tend to have interior rooms that are nicely delineated. This means that while you still need to choose a harmonious color palette for the whole home, the nicely walled off rooms allow you to be bolder than you would in a home with an open floor plan. If you do have an open floor plan, it’s important to make sure you choose colors that work together. Our free color consultant can help you decide on colors that work together to keep the “flow” of the open floor plan without looking “choppy.” It’s worth spending the time upfront with her to get the colors “just right.”
Many of our clients in Cohasset are opting to paint their kitchen cabinets rather than the expense of a full kitchen remodel. We use a particular process and product to deliver a sprayed finish for your kitchen cabinets.
There is a lot of wallpapered rooms in Cohasset, but over time it might have faded or lost its style. Sometimes this wallpaper is hung on water-damaged horsehair plaster walls. We have lots of experience removing wallpaper from all wall types, and repairing the underlying wall.
