Historic homes in Hingham
We’ve painted quite a few historic houses in Hingham and have experience working with the Hingham Historical Society to provide historically accurate color advice to our Clients. We also offer a free, in-home color consultation with our staff designer Kate to help our Hingham customers in both old and new homes choose colors that will look fantastic in our historic town while standing out in their neighborhoods. Our free color consultant can help with both interior and exterior colors.
Exterior suggestions for Hingham homes:
Salt air and stormy Hingham winters: Since Hingham is a coastal town, salt-air and coastal wind bring storms that seem to be getting worse every year. We suggest using paints and stains designed to help combat the winter damage to your Hingham home’s exterior even if it doesn’t sit directly on the coast. We also suggest adding a maintenance coat of paint on Hingham waterfront homes every 3-5 years to help protect your home’s exterior.
Take our short quiz to find out if your home’s exterior needs painting.
Cedar Shingles – a distinctive “look” in Hingham: Cedar shingles are popular because they offer strength, and endurance along with a time-honored New England feeling. In Hingham, most homes contain shingles on at least one or more sides of their exterior. Many Hingham residents like to let their shingles weather or grey over time – this is a classic look that gets better with age. Some customers prefer we coat their shingles with a stain that prevents the natural greying – it’s up to you!
But…shingles can grow mold! Yes, your cedar shingles can be a habitat for plant growth (“plant growth” is our euphemism for “mold and mildew!”). We recommend power-washing cedar shingles with a mold-killing solvent. If your shingles face a shady side of your home, the mildew will certainly grow again. As a precaution, we recommend trimming shady areas so that some sun hits that side of your home to help dry your shingles and slow down plant growth.
Rotted trim, shingles, and clapboards are common on Hingham homes. Wood failure is common on Hingham exteriors due to the storms, wind, and salt-air. Our carpenters repair rotting wood on about 60% of the Hingham homes we paint, so this is a very common issue In Hingham that we can handle before we start painting. If you paint your home yourself, it is important that you never paint over rotted wood. Not only will the paint not adhere, but the wood rot will get much worse very quickly.
PVC vs. Wood replacement boards – We have carpenters on staff to replace rotted wood on your Hingham home before we paint. We often replace rotted wood boards with PVC material like Azek trim boards. While PVC composite boards are more expensive up front, you will not have to replace them again. It’s also our general practice only to replace the rotted wood boards with PVC and leave the rest of the wood boards on your home alone. When painted, PVC Composite boards look almost exactly like the existing wood on your home. To help keep costs down, we leave the non-rotted wood in place and repair only the rotten wood. Today’s PVC is available to match many historic molding styles to maintain your older Hingham home in period style – we can even replace wood gutters with a direct-match PVC solution! If you plan to put your home on the market sooner rather than later, choosing less expensive wood materials to replace your boards can be more cost-effective. It’s up to you!
Salt-air wears away at all Hingham homes, not just those on the coast. Even if your Hingham home is inland and not a waterfront property, the salt Atlantic air is corrosive. Staining and painting your exterior is the only way to protect the wood on your Hingham home. We recommend at least a maintenance coat of paint or stain every 5 years. If your home hasn’t been painted in 7 years (or you can’t remember the last time it was painted), scheduled an online quote and we’ll let you know if it’s time to paint.
Paint products for Hingham exteriors:
While we call ourselves a painting company, we apply a good deal of solid and semi-solid stain on Hingham area homes. Once dried, a solid stain looks just like paint but is able to seep into vulnerable wood fibers and protect the wood from coastal elements such as wind and salt air that affect Hingham homes.
Regardless of whether you use paint or stain, it’s important to use the best paint or stain available. As the South Shore’s largest painting company, we get fantastic discounts from Sherwin Williams, Benjamin Moore, and Farrow & Ball, and we pass those savings along to you in our proposal. All of our quotes include paint, labor, and all materials to complete your project – there is nothing you need to do but tell us the color!
Speaking of color – If you’re thinking of a new color, we’ll also do a color rendering of your home and send you large color samples as part of our quoting process.
If your older Hingham home (built before 1978) contains lead paint, we are certified to work on your home safely. All painters who work on older homes with lead paint must be certified every few years – it is the law in Massachusetts.
Lou was great. Took the time to explain his thoughts about our project and answered a ton of my questions. He’s definitely knowledgeable and passionate about what he does. I look forward to working with CertaPro.

Deck and Porch Maintenance in Hingham:
Most Hingham homes have at least a back deck, a front porch, and sometimes both! No matter the material your deck is made of, we can stain the floorboards, so the damage caused by sun and water is mitigated.
We suggest applying stain every 1-2 years to the floor of a deck to keep it looking nice and prevent damage. Because the floor of a deck is a horizontal surface, water doesn’t “shed” easily and sometimes puddles on the floorboards. This is why you’ll see wear on the floor of your deck before you see it on the spindles and other vertical surfaces, where gravity helps shed the water faster.
Older & antique Hingham homes may contain lead paint
Our staff and crews are EPA RRP certified to safely prepare and paint your older home. Whoever your hire for your older Hingham home, be sure they are certified to renovate lead homes – this is the law in Massachusetts because lead paint is so dangerous to your family when disturbed.
Assume any Hingham home built before 1978 has lead paint when you go to renovate.
Painting your Hingham Interior:
Open floor plans – staple of newly constructed and renovated Hingham homes:
Many newer and remodeled Hingham homes have open floor plans that need a cohesive color palette that does not feel “choppy.” This is because rooms in open floor plans don’t always have a clear “stopping point.” By using a color scheme that coordinates well from one room to another, the open space “flows” better.
You can be bolder in your color choice for rooms with doors, as the walls and doors clearly define where one color begins and another ends. Our free in-home designer is an expert at choosing whole-house palettes and can help you ensure your open floor plan’s colors don’t seem choppy.
Interior painting in older or antique Hingham homes:
Older homes in Hingham usually have walls that nicely separate the rooms downstairs. It’s not rare for Hingham residents to choose paint colors based on the room’s function (for example, a navy blue for the study and a brighter or neutral color for the kitchen).
Plaster walls are common in Hingham.
Our crews have lots of experience with horsehair plaster repairs, wallpaper removal, painting white paint over wood-stained moldings, and most other intricacies of maintaining the antique homes so common in Hingham.
Kate can help you choose interior or exterior paint colors:
Because choosing colors can overwhelm the best of us, we have lots of resources to help you, including:
Free large 8″ x 8″ color samples. Just email [email protected] with the Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore colors you’re thinking of using. We’ll mail them to you for free – even if you’re doing the painting yourself!
Free color fan deck of The colors of the South Shore that we designed with Sherwin Williams.
If you still haven’t decided on a final color by the day we come to paint for you, our painters will sample your paint color finalists before painting to make sure you’re happy with your color selection.
We have a separate Commercial Painting Division too:
And if your Hingham office needs to remain open while we’re painting, we offer night and weekend work at no extra charge – this way, business is not disrupted by the painting or carpentry we’re doing.
Our commercial department really tries to understand what’s important to your property and matches the paint and application to those needs. For example, we can use scuff-resistant paint in high-traffic areas like schools and microbicidal paints that actually kill germs in restrooms.
To schedule a commercial painting quote or to ask us questions about your commercial painting or carpentry project, call Dave Rowell at 781-422-1018 or email him at [email protected].

Because popcorn ceilings trap dirt and dust, this is a popular project for allergy sufferers!
Power washing is an important first step in painting the exterior of your home's surface. CertaPro Painters® of the South Shore and Boston can power wash your home to remove mold, mildew, oil, salt, and old paint so your new paint or stain lasts longer in our harsh New England climate.
Shingle Maintenance and Staining
Cedar shingles are a staple of our area and require occasional power washing & staining to keep them beautiful & protected. We also specialize in staining cedar shingles so they reach that fantastic "Nantucket Gray" color.
Stucco Repairs and Painting
It’s important to maintain the stucco or EIFS (also known as synthetic stucco) that covers your home. CertaPro Painters is knowledgeable in both repairs and painting related to stucco and EIFS, and will educate you in determining the best approach to repairing and painting your stucco home.
Carpentry & Wood Repair
With so much wood on exteriors in our area, about 60% of our painting projects start with wood repair. No need to coordinate an outside carpenter to repair rotted wood, clapboards, trim, deck boards, & replace shingles. We can also add polish to your interior with wainscot, dental & crown molding, baseboard & door casings.
Vinyl and Aluminum Siding Painting
CertaPro Painters’ painting teams use products designed to adhere to aluminum and vinyl. Since the surface of aluminum and vinyl is more stable than wood, the paint finish holds up well when painted. This is a great and cost-effective option if your vinyl or aluminium siding is chalking or faded.
Loved working with Kate to choose colors for my hallway and dining room. Painters are skilled, efficient and clean up well. Have used CertaPro several times for both my interior and exterior & will continue to do so.

CertaPro Painters® – Trusted & Referred Painting Contractors
Finding the best contractor among all South Shore and Boston painting contractors saves you valuable time and money in the long run. Choosing from all the Hingham-area painting companies may seem daunting. If so, evaluate them all based on the below key points.
How much will it cost to paint my Hingham home?
Because cost is our number one question, we’ve compiled this pricing guide to painting homes in Hingham and the South Shore. In general, our prices are not the most expensive on the South Shore, but we’re not the least expensive either.
When can CertaPro paint my Hingham home?
We update this webpage weekly with our current painting timeframes. Check it out!
Why hire CertaPro for your Hingham home?
There are many reasons to hire us, but we have the best reputation on the South Shore for a reason: We deliver what we promise.
We also give back to Hingham and the South Shore in many ways. You’ll see our Sponsor A Highway Sign right at Exit 34 (formerly Exit 14) in Hingham and we have sponsored the Hingham High School graduating class as well as Hingham Little League and many other organizations. We’ve also got a great relationship with the Hingham Historical Society and have partnered with them in the past to paint historically accurate colors on many Hingham date-boarded antique homes.
Can you paint my living room in time for my party?
Hingham residents love to entertain, that is why we have a “rush painting crew” on staff. If you’re having a party or need your home painted in a hurry, most times we can accommodate your timeframe. Just remind us of your deadline when we give you a quote, so we can make sure to prioritize your project.
Keep these 3 things in mind when choosing a painting company for your Hingham home:
- Company reputation: How are previous customers describing their experience with the painting company?
- Written Proposal: Is their proposal detailed and in writing? Or does it seem like an informal estimate? Never accept a verbal quote or even a written quote without a lot of details – this leaves you on the hook for extras that “weren’t included” as the project starts.
- Professionalism: What is your first impression of the estimator? Also, were all of your questions or concerns addressed? And are you confident with their answers to your questions?
This is why Hingham Clients call back CertaPro time and time again:
- Company Reputation: CertaPro Painters the South Shore’s most trusted and preferred painter. Take a look at what your Hingham neighbors have said about us by, reading our reviews.
- Written Proposal: CertaPro Painters provides detailed, customized written proposals and backs our work with a written warranty. We write down on your proposal in words and photos precisely what’s included, so we can efficiently execute your vision, and you can make sure we’ve got it right before we start. It also ensures that everything from the paint and labor is included and that there will be no surprises or extras when we get started.
- Professionalism: We deliver what we promise, on time and on budget.
Hiring the best painting contractor for your Hingham project makes all the difference when you want beautiful paint finishes and a seamless, positive painting experience.
