Carpentry and Siding Replacement Services

If you have clapboards that need replacement before we paint, we have carpenters on staff to replace clapboards, shingles, trim, doors and windows.  It’s imporant that you never paint over rotted wood because the paint job won’t last and the wood will continue to rot as moisture continues to penetrate the wood further.

Wood siding is a staple on the Shore Shore and in the Boston area.  Many wood-sided homes also are built with cedar shingles that we can help maintain as well.

Aluminum and vinyl siding can be successfully painted if you are looking for a color change.  There are very specific formulas and colors that can be used on Vinyl – otherwise, you risk the vinyl on your siding “warping.”   In order to create a beautiful finish on your vinyl or aluminum siding, it is imperative that the proper coating formulas are “vinyl-safe.”

The proper steps to applying a new coat of paint to your wood siding include:

  • Wash the siding to clean off excess dirt, debris, and mold.
  • Scrape any loose paint to a hard edge (this means scraping until paint is not coming off easily)
  • Prepare wood siding by filling holes, sanding, and caulking
  • Sand and smooth all of the areas that have been patched
  • Apply primer- especially to bare wood.  A full-prime is necessary if the underlying paint on your siding is old and unstable.
  • Apply a great quality exterior paint – choosing a better quality paint means you save money in the long run when your painting job lasts longer.

Choosing colors for your exterior siding:

If you are looking to save money and want to get away with one coat of paint, you need to choose a color that’s similar to your current shade of paint.  This way, if you paint only one coat, the underlying coat won’t bleed through.

If you want to change colors completely, you likely will need a tinted primer and two coats of paint so the underlying color doesn’t show through.

Our complimentary color consultant can work with you at your home to decide on new colors for your home – this is usually time well-spent because you’ll be driving up your driveway for years to come and want to love the color of your home!

Application of Paint

We typically paint siding with paint sprayer equipment and back-roll the paint. This technique allows your home to have a nice, even paint finish. Depending on your home's condition though, we may determine a different technique for painting your siding.

Common Questions and Items to Consider

Is painting siding a good idea?

It depends, if your siding is in good shape but has faded colors – painting can be a great option to bring the color and life back to the home. To ensure your siding is protected from the harsh New England winters and hot summers, siding in our area should be painted every 7-10 years, depending on how close your home is to the coast.

What color options do I have?

If you’re trying to save money and you want to paint only one coat of paint, color options will need to stay very close to the color of the current siding. For vinyl exteriors, paint formulas are limited and do not often include darker colors that can induce warping to the vinyl siding.

How much does it cost to have siding on a home painted?

Take a look at our exterior pricing guide – understanding that the exterior prices you see include both siding and trim.

How long do siding painting projects usually take?

The length of the project will depend on the size and shape of the home, but generally a home’s exterior takes a few days to paint.  Take a look at a journal one of our Clients kept when she was getting her exterior siding painted for a day-by-day overview of the exterior painting process.
