Hints for your Norwell exterior painting project:
Norwell Pride is evident in its historic buildings and fantastic schools. The residents of Norwell take a lot of pride in their homes. We’ve painted over 200 Norwell homes over the years and here’s what we know about maintaining them:
Harsh weather: Because Norwell sits near the coast, coastal storms can eat and wear away at your Norwell home’s exterior. We use paints and stains that specifically aid in helping your home resist the wear and tear it endures during our harsh New England winters.
Rotted wood shingles, trim and clapboards are a common complaint from Norwell homeowners. Because so many Norwell homes are built from wood, wood rot is common on Norwell homes – even newer ones. It’s important that if you see rotted wood on your home that you replace it as soon as possible, because if water gets inside the porous wood, the rot will spread.
PVC vs. Wood replacement boards – No need to hire a separate carpenter, as we have carpenters on staff to replace the rotted wood on your Norwell house before we paint. We often replace rotted wood boards with a PVC material (like Azek), so the rotting does not occur again in that area. While PVC tends to be a more expensive material than wood is, knowing you won’t have to replace the board again saves money in the long run. We also don’t have to replace ALL of your (non-rotted) trim with PVC, so replacing a board here and there with PVC will not break the bank. Norwell residents who are moving sooner rather than later, often choose to replace the rotted boards with more wood because it’s less expensive than PVC. When PVC is added to wood trim in a few areas, it is 100% paintable and blends right into your home amongst the other wood trim. In fact there are many PVC moulding profiles to choose from and they even have intricate and historically-accurate PVC moulding now. Here’s an article we wrote on replacing rotted wood if that’s a concern for you.
Boy does Norwell have a lot of cedar shingles! Shingles are nice looking as well as durable and impact-resistant, making them popular in Norwell and all over the South Shore. Cedar shingles often cover whole homes or at the very least, one or two sides of Norwell exteriors. Many Norwell residents prefer to let their shingles “gray” over time and you’ll see this very quaint look throughout the town. Other Norwell residents prefer to coat their shingles with a semi-solid or solid stain to protect them and keep them from weathering. Either way, we are experienced at shingle maintenance, powerwashing and staining. Because cedar shingles tend to grow mold and mildew you may see some black on your shingles or behind them. Power washing with a mold-killing detergent will wash off the mold and mildew, but if your shingles are in a damp or shady area, the mold or mildew will often grow back. We recommend trimming your trees to reduce the shade near your cedar shingles to slow down the mold growth.
Norwell’s climate dictates certain exterior paint and stain formulas
Because Norwell sits a bit inland, the salt from the ocean is usually not a factor in deciding what paint or stain to use, but the harsh New England climate (cold, windy winters and hot summers) is a factor. We frequently apply Benjamin Moore Arborcoat stain and Sherwin Williams Resilience paint on Norwell homes because they both protect Norwell homes as well as beautify them. It is important to understand the different grades and types of paintto make sure you’re using one that will have lasting results. In Norwell, we generally recommend painting your exterior every 5-7 years. We often will apply a “maintenance” coat in year 4-6 to protect your home.
To keep your deck protected and looking nice, we generally paint or stain the floor boards on Norwell homes every 2 years. The finish on deck and porch floor boards are worn by foot and the hot sun in the summer. Rain puddles on the deck boards and snow piles on during the winter, making the deck floor hard to keep protected and looking good without frequent maintenance.

Everything went smoothly and came out exactly as we thought. We are getting lots of compliments from the neighbors.

Choosing exterior paint colors for your Norwell home:
Our exterior color designer will work with you to help you choose colors that blend nicely with the historic homes throughout Norwell. Here are some popular Norwell and South Shore historic paint colors to get you started.
Historic homes are our forte. We’ve painted date-boarded historic homes in Norwell and have worked hard to restore them to their original, authentic historic color. We’ve even worked with the Norwell Historical Society to get the color of your Norwell home looking 100% authentic.
Newer homes in Norwell tend to need a coat of paint every 5 years to help maintain their “new construction” look. Our Norwell customers who have worked with our designer have often chosen exterior and interior colors that allow them to make their newer home more distinct in their cul-de-sac.

Interior painting in Norwell
Many newer and refurbished Norwell homes have open floor plans which need a color scheme that flows seamlessly from room to room with colors that feel cohesive. Our color consultant can help you work with your current furnishings to get your palette just right. Take a look at our reviews from your Norwell neighbors to see how we make the interior painting process easy for you.
Older Norwell walls are often made from horse hair plaster and need repair. Our crews are experienced in repairing your plaster walls before painting them.
Because Norwell is a town with lots of school-aged families, we often recommend specific interior products for painting high-traffic family interiors.
Open-floor plan homes that are popular in the newer and renovated homes throughout Norwell require thoughtful consideration of colors to be sure the flow of the space isn’t chopped up by different colors. Our customers with open floor plans like to work with our (free!) designer, and often choose one color to paint in various tones and shades throughout the open space. This helps delineate the rooms while not feeling choppy.
The interiors of older Norwell homes often have walls that break up the space on the first floor. These very delineated rooms usually have very specific uses (for example: studying, dining and preparing food). Because older homes tend to have walls and doors that clearly mark the transition from one room to the next, painting colors to suit the room’s use and feel, is perfectly acceptable. For example, in an older home with walls and doors separating the downstairs’ rooms, it’s fine to paint a TV room in a calm beige and right next door paint the study a rich brown.
Our color consultant can work with you in your Norwell home at no charge once you choose us to paint for you. We are happy to help with both exterior and interior color choices. We find our happiest customers are the ones who took the hour with our designer to get the colors “just right.”
