Exterior Painting Tips for Plymouth, Massachusetts homes:
We’ve painted date-boarded homes in Plymouth and have worked side-by-side with historical architects to be sure our customer’s exterior colors were historically accurate. Our Plymouth customers in newer homes have also worked closely with our staff designer (free service to our customers) to choose exterior colors that “feel like Plymouth,” while still standing out as unique from their neighbors’ homes.
Deck and Porch Painting in Plymouth:
Most Plymouth homes have a deck or porch to enjoy the wonderful breezes and outdoors. Wood decks and porches need maintenance – especially floorboards that are exposed to the harsh New England winters and summer sun. With the water puddling on deck floorboards, the wooden deck boards need maintenance every 2 years to remain not only beautiful but protected from rotting. We have carpenters on staff that can replace any deck boards that have already rotted prior to us staining your deck.
Many Plymouth decks and porches “grow” a green algae, mold or mildew. Sometimes this means you need to restain your deck and other times it means you you can get away with a good cleaning of your deck.
Interior painting inside newer Plymouth homes:
The newer home developments in Plymouth include lots of open-floor-plan homes, where deciding on a color palette is a matter of choosing one or two colors and a few tones that work together nicely. Our color consultant has helped lots of our Plymouth and South Shore customers decide on a “whole house” palette that allows an open floor plan to flow together, without feeling choppy.
We have painted dozens of homes at the Pinehills and Kate our designer can work with you in your home to help you choose colors that work with your “new home that’s designed to look older.” Working with Kate to choose paint colors is a free service we offer to all of our customers. And Kate is adept at choosing both interior paint colors and exterior paint colors if you’d like your home to stand out in your neighborhood. We’ll even provide a color rendering of your new paint color on a photo of the room before you hire us – just let your estimator know you’d like this when you meet them for the quote.
Check out our article about choosing colors historic to Plymouth to get some ideas on both interior and exterior colors. We’re happy to mail you large color samples of any Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore paint color, even if you’re doing the painting yourself. If you’d like color samples, just email your choices to [email protected].
Interior Painting to older and antique Plymouth homes:
As a historic community, there are many historic homes and buildings in Plymouth that require very specific painting and repair know-how. Have horsehair plaster walls? We can handle horsehair plaster repairs, wallpaper removal, painting natural or stained moldings, and most other issues that you’ll encounter when repairing and maintaining your older or antique Plymouth home.
Painting your kitchen cabinets – less expensive than a full kitchen remodel:
We paint dozens of kitchen cabinets each year in Plymouth because it’s a great way to update your kitchen without the expense of a full remodel. One of our customers who recently had this done kept a photo journal of the kitchen cabinet painting process.
Want a new paint color, but can’t visualize what it will look like in your home?
We offer a free paint color rendering with every quote we do. Just let your estimator know you’d like this and they’ll snap a few photos so our designer can show you a few color choices. This is available to anyone who calls us for a quote, even before you decide to hire us.
Lead paint is an issue on Plymouth homes built before 1978:
If your interior or exterior contains lead paint, we are licensed to work inside and outside your home safely – it’s the law in Massachusetts that any painting contractor that works on a home with lead paint must be licensed to do it safely.

A checklist of things to consider when painting your Plymouth home:
Most Plymouth homes have at least some cedar shingles that require care and maintenance. Many Plymouth customers like to allow their shingles to weather to a gray color while other people like to add a coat of solid or semi-solid stain so their shingles don’t weather very much and remain newer looking. Learn more about shingled homes here.
Shingles often grow mold and mildew and need a good powerwashing using a mold-killing detergent. However, if shingles are constantly in the shade, the mold or mildew will grow back, so it’s a good idea to trim shady trees to let the sun shine on your shingles to dry them out and prevent the mold from growing in the first place.
As far as home styles, Colonials and Cape Cod-style homes are the most prevalent types of homes we paint in the town of Plymouth. Both Colonial and Cape-style homes tend to have shingles on between one and all four sides of the house.
Rotted wood (trim, clapboards, shingles) is very common in Plymouth because the salt air and the harsh winter coastal storms have hit Plymouth especially hard in the past few years. We have carpenters on staff that can take care of these issues before we paint. It is important that homeowners repair all rotted wood on their home’s exterior as soon as they see it, so the rot does not grow larger and is more costly to repair.
Coastal Plymouth has been battered by recent winters. This has caused a lot of wind, water, and salt damage to exterior homes. Again, our carpenters can repair these issues before we paint for you using products and coating specifically designed for coastal climates. We replace rotted wood on about 60% of Plymouth homes right before we paint them – and our busy customers appreciate the “one-stop shopping” we provide. Need your gutters cleaned while we’re painting? Just let us know and we’ll handle that while we’re on site.
Consider PVC boards when replacing rotted wood – especially if you’ll be staying in your home for a while. PVC is a composite board that is manufactured and unlike wood, it does not rot. Although PVC is more expensive than wood, replacing rotted wood with PVC is a permanent solution that’s likely to repay you with less maintenance. This is especially important if you’ll be in your home a few more years. PVC boards like Trex are great for deck floorboards as they need little to no maintenance – much easier than maintaining a wood deck.
Tip about replacing rotted wood with PVC boards: Most homes have just a few boards that might rot – they may be near the ground or window frames that catch drips from the gutter. You don’t have to replace all your trim with PVC – just the rotted wood boards. This way, you can save money and once the PVC is painted, the new PVC boards will blend right into the real wood on your home. The only thing you’ll notice is that those PVC boards no longer rot. In fact, PVC is also available in many historic molding profiles so they look even more authentic on your Plymouth home.
The timing and type of paint we recommend for Plymouth exteriors: In general, Plymouth homes made of wood generally need painting every 6-8 years and it’s a good idea to add a maintenance coat of paint even before this time to keep your home protected. If your home is directly on the coast make sure you are using a durable grade of paint to help protect your home from the wind and driving rain.
Because it gets too cold and wet to paint outside in Plymouth, we generally can only paint outside between March and November in the Plymouth area.
Does my exterior need painting?
Paint tends to “wear away” and become less protective over time. In fact, it’s not always clear if your exterior needs painting because your house looks fine.
If you can rub your hand against your exterior paint and have some paint come off on your hand, like chalk, your paint is no longer protecting your home.
When can you start my project?

EPA Lead Certified
At CertaPro Painters® of the South Shore and Boston we are EPA Lead Certified. Epoxy Finishes to your concrete floor
Epoxy coatings help your garage, and basement floors seem polished and more “finished.” By locking in the concrete dust that gets kicked up when people drive or walk on concrete, these coatings can keep the rest of your home cleaner as well.
Exterior House Painting and Staining

Our interior painters can paint your interior walls, baseboard, trim, and doors, and moldings. Our interior color consultant can come to your home to help you choose colors that you love, that work with your current furnishings.
Kitchen Cabinet Painting
Painting outdated kitchen cabinets makes your home instantly more modern, and tends to provide a huge "boost" to the feel of your entire home. Our complimentary designer helps sample cabinet colors that look great with your current kitchen counters.
Popcorn Ceiling Removal
While popcorn ceilings had their time on top trends lists, they are rarely seen in modern homes. Removing a popcorn ceiling yourself can be extremely difficult. The crew at CertaPro Painters® of the South Shore and Bostonis trained to remove popcorn ceilings in an effective way that will leave your ceilings feeling fresh. Because popcorn ceilings trap dirt and dust, this is a popular project for allergy sufferers!
Power washing is an important first step in painting the exterior of your home's surface. CertaPro Painters® of the South Shore and Boston can power wash your home to remove mold, mildew, oil, salt, and old paint so your new paint or stain lasts longer in our harsh New England climate.
Shingle Maintenance and Staining
Cedar shingles are a staple of our area and require occasional power washing & staining to keep them beautiful & protected. We also specialize in staining both cedar shingles so they reach that fantastic "Nantucket Gray" color.
Stucco Repairs and Painting
It’s important to maintain the stucco or EIFS (also known as synthetic stucco) that covers your home. CertaPro Painters is knowledgeable in both repairs and painting related to stucco and EIFS, and will educate you in determining the best approach to repairing and painting your stucco home.
Carpentry & Wood Repair
With so much wood on our exteriors, 60% of our painting projects start with wood repair. No need to coordinate an outside carpenter to repair rotted wood, clapboards, trim, deck boards, & replace shingles. We can also add polish to your interior with wainscot, dental & crown molding, baseboard & door casings.
Vinyl and Aluminum Siding Painting
CertaPro Painters’ painting teams use products designed to adhere to aluminum and vinyl. Since the surface of aluminum and vinyl is more stable than wood, the paint finish holds up well when painted. This is a great and cost-effective option if your vinyl or aluminium siding is chalking or faded.
