Maintaining Homes in Hull
Hull is the South Shore’s most unique and coastal town, and maintaining a home in Hull presents a few unique challenges. We’ve painted everything from Hull antique Victorian homes in the Village to bungalows in the Alphabets, and also have done work for a number of commercial and condo clients in Hull as well.
Historic homes in Hull. We’ve painted quite a few historic houses in Hull, Hingham, and elsewhere, and have experience working with various historic societies to provide historically accurate color advice to our Clients. We also offer a complimentary, in-home color consult with our staff designer to help our Hull customers in both old and new homes, choose colors that will look fantastic on the shores of Hull, while also allowing them to stand out amongst their neighbors. Our color consultant can help you with both interior and exterior colors.
Our thoughts on painting in Hull
Salt air and stormy Hull winters: Hull is the most coastal town on the South Shore. Some of Hull’s homes see direct seawater exposure during our winter nor’easters, and salty air can be an issue for our house coatings year-round. We suggest specific paints and stains that are engineered to help combat the winter damage to your Hull home’s exterior. We also suggest adding a coat of paint to help protect your home’s exterior every 3-5 years – we call this a “maintenance coat,” and it is a common service we perform in Hull and other South Shore coastal towns to keep moisture at bay and protect wood surfaces.
Cedar Shingles – on lots (and lots!) of Hull homes: Cedar shingles have long been used as exterior siding for centuries, and offer durability along with a time-honored New England feel. In Hull, many homes are sided with cedar shingles that have years of existing coatings. We have experience in removing these coatings prior to painting a new coating on. Many Hull residents like to let their shingles weather or grey over time – this is a classic look that just gets better with age. Some Hull customers prefer we coat their shingles with a stain that prevents the greying – it’s up to you!
But…shingles can grow mold! Yes, your cedar shingles can be a habitat for plant growth (“plant growth” is a euphemism for “mold and mildew!”). We recommend power-washing cedar shingles with a mold-killing solvent. If your shingles face a shady side of your home, the mildew will certainly grow back again. As a precaution, we recommend trimming shady areas so that there is some sunshine that can help dry your shingles and slow down the plant growth. The sunlight also allows the shingles to “breathe.” Ahhhhh!
Rotted trim, shingles and clapboards are common on Hull homes. Wood failure is common on Hull exteriors due to damage by the many coastal storms we face, wind and salt-air. Our carpenters repair rotting wood on about 50% of the houses in Hull that we paint so it’s a very common issue that our carpenters can repair for you before we start painting. It is important if you are painting your home yourself that you never paint over rotted wood. Not only will the paint fail to adhere, but the wood rot will get much worse very quickly.
PVC vs. Wood replacement boards – We have carpenters on staff to replace rotted wood on your Hull home before we paint. We often replace rotted wood boards with PVC material like Azek trim boards. While PVC is more expensive, you will not have to replace it again. It’s also our general practice to only replace the rotted wood boards with PVC, which when painted is hard to distinguish from the existing wood on your home. To help keep costs down, we leave the non-rotted wood in place and repair only the wood that is rotten. Today’s PVC is available to match many historic moulding styles to maintain your older Hull home in period style – we can even replace wood gutters with a direct-match PVC gutter! If you plan to put your home on the market sooner rather than later, it can be more cost effective to choose less expensive wood materials to replace your boards – it’s your choice.
Home Interiors in Hull
Open-floor plan homes that are popular in the newer and renovated homes throughout Hull often need a single color in various tones to help the space together as you move throughout the first floor, and up the stairs to the upper hall. It can be fun to choose a bold color for a powder room or first-floor office. Hull teens and tweens are often included on appointments with our color consultant in order to give them some independence in choosing their own room color, while keeping with the feel of the rest of your home – we understand this delicate balance!
Older homes in Hull can have unique stained mouldings that can stand up for years. We can offer options to touch up stain, or convert the stained mouldings and trim to painted mouldings for a more modern look. It’s not rare for Hull residents to choose paint colors based on the function of the room (for example a beachy green for the sun porch and a brighter or more neutral color for the kitchen). Our crews have lots of experience with horsehair plaster repairs, wallpaper removal, painting white over stained mouldings, and most other intricacies of maintaining the antique homes that are common to Hull, Duxbury, Scituate, Cohasset, and Hingham.
Our color consultant works with our Hull customers to help give them the confidence to try a color a bit more unique than you would try on your own. Of course, we will never push you to paint a color outside of your comfort zone though!
If you have any questions about painting your Hull home, feel free to email me at Pnejame@certapro.com. I’m happy to answer your questions, even if you’re doing the painting yourself!

Concrete Staining and Epoxy Finish
Applying a stain to an interior or exterior concrete floor can add unique dimension to any space. You can enhance the durability of your concrete with an epoxy floor coating. The CertaPro Painters® of the South Shore and Boston team is trained in applying concrete stains and epoxy floor coatings.
Since your home is exposed to salt air and New England winters, we have carpenters on staff to replace the rotting wood, window sills, shingles and clapboards that inevitably occurs in homes on the South Shore. The CertaPro Painters® of the South Shore and Boston team can also install decorative borders inside your home including crown molding, baseboards, door casings, and wainscoting.
Deck & Fence Painting and Staining
At CertaPro Painters® of the South Shore and Boston we offer a variety of interior and exterior home painting and staining services, including your home’s deck and fencing. Regardless of the room inside your home that needs an update or the area of your home’s exterior that needs protection from Mother Nature, our team works with you to determine the best plan of action for your home.
Whether your home has water damage that requires drywall repair or your walls have medium-to-large holes that need patching, the CertaPro Painters® of the South Shore and Boston crew will patch, sand and prime, to create a flawless surface to paint on.
EPA Lead Certified
At CertaPro Painters® of the South Shore and Boston we are EPA Lead Certified. This means that if we are performing a renovation, repair or painting project that disturbs lead-based paint in your home, we use certified renovators who are trained by EPA-approved training providers and follow lead-safe work practices.
Power washing is a vital step in painting the exterior of your home. CertaPro Painters® of the South Shore and Boston uses the process to remove mold, oil and old paint so new paint absorbs into your surface better.
Stucco Repairs and Painting
As with any other home exterior, it’s important to maintain the stucco or EIFS (also known as synthetic stucco) covering your home. The CertaPro Painters® of the South Shore and Boston team is very knowledgeable in both repairs and painting related to these two materials and will work alongside you to determine what services your home needs.
Carpentry & Wood Repair
Because there is so much wood on South Shore and Boston area exteriors, almost 60% of our painting projects start with some sort of wood repair before we paint. Our busy customers appreciate that we can do the whole painting job for them, without having to coordinate an outside carpenter to repair rotted wood, clapboards, trim, deck and porch boards and replace shingles for them.
Vinyl and Aluminum Siding Painting
CertaPro Painters’ painting teams use products designed to adhere to aluminum and vinyl. Since the surface of aluminum and vinyl is more stable than wood, the paint finish holds up well when painted. This is a great and cost-effective option if your vinyl or aluminium siding is chalking or faded.
They did an excellent job.
