Painting your Cohasset home’s exterior:
The houses in Cohasset span many architectural styles – we’ve helped paint them all. We’ve painted some of the earliest surviving Cohasset residences built in the 18th century, Italian Renaissance-style villas and ornate Victorian homes from the 19th century, many Cape-style houses constructed after WWII, and more contemporary homes. Each of these Cohasset homes has its own needs, and we’re well-versed in maintaining them.
There are many homes in Cohasset that boast beautiful and expansive ocean views along the rocky coast. With these views comes exposure to harsh salt air and wind-driven rains, which wear down exterior coatings faster than inland homes. We use paints and stains especially formulated to better hold up to these conditions and provide a more lasting paint project in Cohasset.
While most Cohasset exteriors are constructed with wood, we also have experience with stucco homes and modern composite siding materials such as James Hardie or Boral. No matter what the exterior of your Cohasset home is made from, we have the experience and knowledge needed to coat it properly.
Products that help protect Cohasset exteriors from the harsh coastal weather and salt air:
For exterior wood trim: Sherwin Williams Resilience paint.
For wood clapboards: Sherwin Williams Woodscapes solid or semi-solid stain. Because it has so much pigment in it, a solid stain looks just like paint when applied but gives more protection to the wood than paint does because stain penetrates the wood (paint sits on top).
Choosing a color for your Cohasset exterior – modern or historic?
“All-white” homes are fairly common in Cohasset, but some of our clients, even in older homes, opt for subtle grays and other shades for their home’s exterior.
Historic colors are our specialty, as we’ve painted many antique and date-boarded homes throughout the South Shore and Boston area.
We’ve also worked directly with the Cohasset Historical Society to find an original color for your antique Cohasset home. The Cohasset Historical Society will also help you to research your home or property to find the authentic original colors of your home!
Our free color consultant can also help you choose a new paint color to change it up. Drive around Cohasset and snap photos of homes you like. Note the address, and if you have us paint for you, we’ll drive by and match that color for you.
Cohasset homes sure have a lot of shingles!
To gray cedar shingles: We apply bleaching stain to help them to gray over time.
To stain cedar shingles and see the wood grain, We apply a translucent stain.
We suggest solid stains to stain cedar shingles so that no wood grain shows. Solid stains look like paint but seep into the wood to protect it better than paint.
The black you see on your shingles is likely mold or mildew. We power wash the mold and treat the shingles with stains to help clean and protect them.
The dark brown on your shingles are the natural tannins inside the wood. Tannins naturally occur within the wood shingle and will turn your home a dark brown over time. To block the tannins, we recommend a slow-drying oil primer. Using a slow-drying primer will allow the primer to seep into the wood shingle for a longer time vs. a regular primer, helping to protect the shingles from tannin-bleed.
Mahogany decks are typical to many Cohasset homes. To keep them looking their best and to protect them, decks should be coated every 1-2 years. We usually suggest a translucent oil stain for the richest possible finish. You can read our guide to maintaining decks and porches for more information.
Painting your Cohasset interior:
Older and antique homes in Cohasset tend to have interior rooms nicely separated by walls. While you still need to choose a harmonious color palette for the whole home, the nicely walled-off rooms allow you to be bolder than you would in a home with an open floor plan.
We have lots of experience repairing and painting horsehair plaster walls – a staple of many Cohasset homes.
Open floor plans: Some renovated and newly constructed homes in Cohasset have open floor plans. With an open space, it’s important to make sure you choose colors that work well together. Our free color consultant, Kate, can help you decide on colors that work together to keep the “flow” of the open floor plan without looking “choppy.” It’s worth spending the time upfront with her to get the colors “just right.”
Removing wallpaper: There are many wallpapered rooms in Cohasset, but over time, the style might have faded or lost. Sometimes, this wallpaper is hung on water-damaged horsehair plaster walls. We have lots of experience removing wallpaper from all wall types and repairing the underlying wall.
Painting kitchen cabinets: Many of our clients in Cohasset are opting to paint their kitchen cabinets rather incur the expense of a full kitchen remodel. We use a particular process and product to deliver a sprayed finish for your kitchen cabinets so there are no brush strokes.
Small store paint chips are not large enough to help you decide on a color!
We can order you (free!) 8” x 8” color samples from Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams. Just email us at [email protected] with the colors you’re thinking of, and we’re happy to mail them to you for free – even if you’re doing the project yourself. We always suggest larger samples of actual paint in the rooms, in the sheen and color you’ll use. It’s best to do this yourself before the painting project, so you’ll have time to see the colors in different lighting and ensure they are just right. We can also brush on large paint samples before painting the whole house on the first day of work. Spending time getting the color right up front makes a lot of sense.

Projects We’ve Completed in the Cohasset-area
Cohasset Carpentry & Wood Repairs
Because most Cohasset homes are made of wood, about 60% of Cohasset homes need some kind of wood repair before we paint.
Some customers need trim and clapboards replaced, others need a whole side of their home re-shingled. To make this easy for our Cohasset customers, we have carpenters on staff who can repair the wood before we start painting.
We are also experts at deck wood replacement, staining, and maintaining your decks and porches.
Excellent workmanship and finished before our party.

Cohasset decks and porches
After the cruel coastal winters, Cohasset residents rely on their decks and porches to relax during our breezy summers. Maintaining the floorboards of your deck or porch must be done every two years to protect the boards from the hot sun and rain and keep them looking beautiful.
Not sure if your Cohasset exterior needs painting?
It’s often not obvious if your exterior needs to be painted. Lots of Cohasset homes may look okay to the eye, but aren’t necessarily protected from our New England winters and the salt air. Lots of people don’t remember the last time they painted their exterior or they bought the home and forgot to ask the previous owners when they last painted the outside of the house. Of course, we are happy to give you an honest opinion – we’ve been known to tell the Client that they don’t need to paint yet and have a few more years of life in their paint job!
Take this 20-second quiz to find out if your Cohasset home has any of the signs of needing a coat of paint.
Is the paint included in the quote?
All costs are included in the quote we give you for your Cohasset home. We get the best pricing on the South Shore for Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams paint, so we pass that on to our customers. We are also happy to paint whatever brand you prefer, or we can match any paint color to Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams, which have paint formulas that are well suited for the Cohasset climate of saltwater, coastal wind, and the hot summer sun.
Lead paint on Cohasset homes
Many Cohasset homes were built before 1978 and may contain lead paint. Our staff and painters are EPA RRP certified to prepare and paint your older home safely. It is the law in Massachusetts that all contractors working on homes that contain lead paint be educated and licensed.
We have a separate Commercial Painting Division, too:
Cohasset businesses, medical offices, religious facilities, restaurants, property managers, shops, and facility managers have worked with CertaPro Painters for years.
And if your Cohasset business or office needs to remain open while we’re painting, we offer night and weekend work at no extra charge – this way, your customers and staff are not disrupted by the painting we’re doing.
Our commercial department also does a great job matching the paint coating to your property’s needs. For example, we can use scuff-resistant paint in high-traffic areas like schools and microbicidal paints that actually kill germs in restrooms.
To schedule a commercial painting quote or to ask us questions about your commercial painting or carpentry project, call Dave Rowell at 781-422-1018 or email him at [email protected].
