Exterior Painting Tips for Plymouth, Massachusetts homes:

Whether your home is made of brick, wood, shingles or something else, we’re trained to paint these homes with an eye toward the harsh New England environment Plymouth is set in.

We’ve painted date-boarded homes in Plymouth and have worked side-by-side with historical architects to be sure our customers’ exterior colors were historically accurate. Our Plymouth customers in newer homes have also worked closely with our designer (working with her is a free service to our customers) to choose exterior colors that “feel like Plymouth” while still standing out as unique from their neighbors’ homes.

Deck and Porch Painting in Plymouth, Mass.:

Most Plymouth homes have a deck or porch to enjoy the wonderful breezes and outdoors. Wood decks and porches need maintenance – especially floorboards exposed to the harsh New England winters and summer sun.  With the water puddling on deck floorboards, the wooden deckboards need maintenance every two years to remain beautiful and protected from rotting.  We have carpenters on staff who can replace any deck boards that have already rotted before we stain your deck.

Many Plymouth decks and porches “grow” green algae, mold, or mildew.  Sometimes this means you need to restain your deck, and other times, you can get away with a good cleaning of your deck.

Interior painting inside newer Plymouth, Mass. homes:

The newer home developments in Plymouth include lots of open-floor-plan homes, where deciding on a color palette is a matter of choosing one or two colors and a few tones that work together nicely. Our color consultant has helped lots of our Plymouth and South Shore customers decide on a “whole house” palette that allows an open floor plan to flow together without feeling choppy.

We have painted dozens of homes at the Pinehills, and Kate, our designer, can work with you in your home to help you choose colors that work with your “new home that’s designed to look older.”  Working with Kate to choose paint colors is a free service we offer to all of our customers.  Kate is also adept at choosing interior and exterior paint colors if you want your home to stand out in your neighborhood.  We’ll even provide a color rendering of your new paint color on a photo of the room before you hire us – just let your estimator know you’d like this when you meet them for the quote.

Check out our article about choosing historic colors for Plymouth to get some ideas on interior and exterior colors.  We’re happy to mail you large color samples of any Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore paint color, even if you’re doing the painting yourself.  If you’d like color samples, just email your choices to [email protected].

Interior Painting to older and antique Plymouth, Massachusetts homes:

Plymouth is a historic community with many historic homes and buildings that require very specific painting and repair know-how. Do you have horsehair plaster walls? We can handle horsehair plaster repairs, wallpaper removal, painting natural or stained moldings, and other issues you’ll encounter when repairing and maintaining your older or antique Plymouth home.

We work with the Plymouth Historical Society to match historically accurate colors as well.

Painting your kitchen cabinets – less expensive than a full kitchen remodel:

We paint dozens of kitchen cabinets yearly in Plymouth because it’s a great way to update your kitchen without the expense of a full remodel.  One of our customers who recently had this done kept a photo journal of the kitchen cabinet painting process.

Want a new paint color but can’t visualize what it will look like in your home?

We offer a free paint color rendering with every quote we do.  Just let your estimator know you’d like this, and they’ll snap a few photos so our designer can show you a few color choices.  This is available to anyone who calls us for a quote, even before you decide to hire us.

Lead paint is an issue on Plymouth homes built before 1978:

If your interior or exterior contains lead paint, we are licensed to work inside and outside your home safely – it’s the law in Massachusetts that any painting contractor who works on a home with lead paint must be licensed to do it safely.

How much will it cost to paint my Plymouth home?

We specialize in medical and dental offices and can keep your sensitive medical equipment safe while we paint.

If your Plymouth business needs to be open during the painting, we offer night and weekend painting at no extra charge.  This way, your business can stay open while we paint for you.

A checklist of things to consider when painting your Plymouth home:

Most Plymouth homes have at least some cedar shingles that require care and maintenance. Many Plymouth customers like to allow their shingles to weather to a gray color while others like to add a coat of solid or semi-solid stain, so their shingles don’t weather very much and remain newer looking.  Learn more about shingled homes here.

Shingles often grow mold and mildew and need good power washing using a mold-killing detergent. However, if shingles are constantly in the shade, the mold or mildew will grow back, so it’s a good idea to trim shady trees to let the sun shine on your shingles to dry them out and prevent the mold from growing in the first place.

Colonials and Cape Cod-style homes are the most prevalent types of homes we paint in the town of Plymouth. Colonial and Cape-style homes tend to have shingles between one and all four sides of the house.

Rotted wood (trim, clapboards, shingles) is very common in Plymouth because the salt air and the harsh winter coastal storms have hit Plymouth especially hard in the past few years. We have carpenters on staff that can take care of these issues before we paint. It is important that homeowners repair all rotted wood on their home’s exterior as soon as they see it, so the rot does not grow larger and is more costly to repair.

Coastal Plymouth gets battered by the harsh climate. This has caused a lot of wind, water, and salt damage to exterior homes. Again, our carpenters can repair these issues before we paint for you using products and coating specifically designed for coastal climates.  We replace rotted wood on about 60% of Plymouth homes before we paint them – and our busy customers appreciate the “one-stop shopping” we provide.  Need your gutters cleaned while we’re painting?  Just let us know, and we’ll handle that while we’re on site.

Consider PVC boards when replacing rotted wood – especially if you’ll stay in your home for a while. PVC is a manufactured composite board; unlike wood, it does not rot. Although PVC is more expensive than wood, replacing rotted wood with PVC is a permanent solution that’s likely to repay you with less maintenance.  This is especially important if you’ll be in your home for a few more years.  PVC boards like Trex are great for deck floorboards as they need little to no maintenance – much easier than maintaining a wood deck.

Tip about replacing rotted wood with PVC boards:  Most homes have just a few boards that might rot – they may be near the ground or window frames that catch drips from the gutter.  You don’t have to replace all your trim with PVC – just the rotted wood boards.  This way, you can save money, and once the PVC is painted, the new PVC boards will blend right into the real wood on your home.  You’ll only notice that those PVC boards no longer rot.  In fact, PVC is also available in many historic molding profiles, so they look even more authentic on your Plymouth home.

The timing and type of paint we recommend for Plymouth exteriors: Plymouth homes made of wood generally need painting every 6-8 years, and it’s a good idea to add a maintenance coat of paint even before this time to keep your home protected.  If your home is directly on the coast, make sure you use a durable grade of paint to help protect your home from the wind and driving rain.

Because it gets too cold and wet to paint outside in Plymouth, we generally can only paint outside between March and November in the Plymouth area.

Does my Plymouth, MA exterior need painting?

Paint tends to “wear away” and become less protective over time. In fact, it’s not always clear if your exterior needs painting because your house looks fine.

If you can rub your hand against your exterior paint and have some paint, like chalk, come off your hand, your paint is no longer protecting your home.

Here’s a 20-second quiz to see if your home needs painting.

Second homes in Plymouth:

If you own a second home in Plymouth, we can paint your home even if you live out of state and can’t be on-site.  We can also schedule the painting to happen between tenants or Airbnb guests.
