House Painting Surface Preparation

Quality Work Starts with Quality Preparation

sanding a home to prep for painting project
Sanding the trim on this home prior to painting ensures the paint adheres well.

Our surface preparation processes are designed to uncover and repair existing damage, minimize future deterioration, and protect your home from water intrusion and air leaks. Great preps also serves as the foundation for beautiful finishes and coatings. Our exterior preparation techniques include:

  • Power or hand washing to release ambient dirt and organic growth (mildew, algae, mold, etc.) so that the exteror is clean and new primer/paint can adhere properly.
  • Scraping to remove loose and peeling paint in areas that are obviously peeling, as well as in the regions that we know tend to peel or bubble.
  • Sanding scraped areas to ensure paint edges don’t peel up, as well as improve their appearance.  Note:  Sanding cannot be performed on projects with lead paint, as we don’t want the lead paint dust to end up being tracked through the job site or home and causing health problems.
  • Identifying rotten or damaged wood and recommending wood repair we can handle to ensure you are adhering paint to a stable surface.  Paint cannot be brushed over rotten wood.
  • Removing degraded caulk and applying new, high-quality caulks or sealants, especially around windows and doors, to seal out drafts and moisture.
  • Removing and replacing degraded window glazing/putty to stabilize the window glass.
