Tips on painting your home in East Bridgewater
Harsh New England Weather: As an inland town in Plymouth county, many homes experience high winds and harsh weather, especially during our winter storms and nor’easters. We suggest specific paints and stains that are engineered to help combat the winter damage to your home’s exterior. We also suggest adding a coat of paint to help protect your home’s exterior every 5-7 years – we call this a “maintenance coat,” and it is a common service we perform in East Bridgewater and other Plymouth county towns to keep moisture at bay and protect wood surfaces.
Cedar Shingles – on lots of East Bridgewater homes: Cedar shingles have long been used as exterior siding in New England for centuries, and offer durability along with a “New England” feel. In East Bridgewater, many homes are sided with cedar shingles that have years of existing coatings. We have experience in removing these coatings prior to painting them. Many residents like to let their shingles weather or grey over time – this is a classic look that just gets better with age. And some customers prefer we coat their shingles with a stain that prevents the greying – it’s up to you!
But…shingles can grow mold! Yes, your cedar shingles can be a ripe environment for mold and mildew. We recommend power-washing cedar shingles with a mold-killing solvent. If your shingles face a shady side of your home, the mildew will certainly grow back again. As a precaution, we recommend trimming shady areas so that some sunshine can help dry your shingles and slow down mold and mildew growth on that side of your home.
Rotted trim, shingles and clapboards are common on East Bridgewater houses. Wood failure is common on exteriors due to damage by harsh storms and wind, which wear away at the paint and expose the raw wood underneath to moisture. Before we paint, our carpenters repair rotting wood on about 40% of the houses in town, so wood rot is a very common issue. It is important if you are painting your home yourself that you never paint over rotted wood. Not only will the paint fail to adhere, but the wood rot will get much worse very quickly because moisture will be able to seep into the wood easily.
PVC vs. Wood replacement boards – We have carpenters on staff to replace rotted wood on your home before we paint. We often replace rotted wood boards and trim with PVC material like Azek trim boards. While PVC is more expensive, you will not have to replace it again. It’s also our general practice to only replace the rotted wood boards with PVC, which when painted is hard to distinguish from the existing wood on your home. To help keep costs down, we leave the non-rotted wood in place and repair only the rotten wood. Today’s PVC is even available to match historic molding styles to maintain your older East Bridgewater home in authentic period style.

Painting East Bridgewater Interiors
Open-floor plan homes are popular in the newer and renovated homes throughout East Bridgewater and often just need a single color in various tones to help the space together as you move throughout the first floor, and up the stairs to the upper hall. It can be fun to choose a bold color for a powder room or first-floor office. Our free color consultant can help you get a cohesive color palette for your first floor and whole home.
Older homes in East Bridgewater often have unique stained moldings that can stand up for years. We can offer options to touch up the stain, or convert the stained moldings and trim to painted moldings for a more modern look. Our painting and carpentry crews have lots of experience with horsehair plaster repairs, wallpaper removal, painting white over stained moldings, and most other intricacies of maintaining your house.
Our color consultant works with our Clients to give them the confidence to try a color a bit more unique than you would try on your own. We’ll even do a computer rendering showcasing several colors in your space before you even hire us, so you have an idea of what color would look best in your space. Of course, we will never push you to paint a color outside of your comfort zone though!
