Maintaining Homes in Hull, Ma:
Because Hull sits directly on the Atlantic coast, and maintaining a home in Hull presents a few unique challenges. We’ve painted everything from Hull antique Victorian homes in the Village to bungalows in the Alphabets, and we have also done work for several commercial and condo clients in Hull.
Historic homes in Hull. We’ve painted quite a few historic houses in Hull, Hingham, and elsewhere and have experience working with various historic societies to provide historically accurate color advice to our Clients. We also offer a complimentary, in-home color consult with our designer to help our Hull customers in both old and new homes choose colors that will look fantastic on the shores of Hull while also allowing them to stand out amongst their neighbors. Our color consultant can help you with both interior and exterior colors. Look at our very own color fan deck “Colors of the South Shore,” which Sherwin Williams published with our consultation.
Our thoughts on painting in Hull
Salt air and stormy Hull winters: As a coastal town on the South Shore, many homes experience high winds and harsh weather, especially during our winter storms and nor’easters. Hull’s salty air can be an issue for our house coatings year-round. We suggest specific paints and stains that are engineered to help combat the winter damage to your Hull home’s exterior. We also suggest adding a coat of paint to help protect your home’s exterior every 3-5 years – we call this a “maintenance coat,” and it is a common service we perform in Hull and other South Shore coastal towns to keep moisture at bay and protect wood surfaces.
Cedar Shingles – on lots (and lots!) of Hull homes: Cedar shingles have long been used as exterior siding for centuries in New England towns like Hull, offering durability and a classic feel. In Hull, many homes are sided with cedar shingles with years of existing coatings. We have experience removing these coatings before painting a new coating. Many Hull residents like to let their shingles weather or grey over time – this is a classic look that gets better with age. Some Hull customers prefer we coat their shingles with a stain that prevents the greying – it’s up to you!
But…shingles can grow mold! Yes, your cedar shingles can be a habitat for plant growth. We recommend power-washing cedar shingles with a mold-killing solvent. If your shingles face a shady side of your home, the mildew will certainly grow again. As a precaution, we recommend trimming shady areas so that some sunshine can help dry your shingles and slow down plant growth. The sunlight also allows the shingles to “breathe.”
Rotted trim, shingles, and clapboards are common on Hull homes. Wood failure is common on Hull exteriors due to damage by the many coastal storms we face, wind, and salt air. Our carpenters repair rotting wood on about 50% of the houses in Hull that we paint, so it’s a very common issue that our carpenters can repair for you before we start painting. If you paint your home yourself, you must never paint over rotted wood. The paint will fail to adhere, and the wood rot will get much worse quickly.
PVC vs. Wood replacement boards – We have carpenters on staff to replace rotted wood on your Hull home before we paint. We often replace rotted wood boards and trim with PVC material like Azek trim boards. While PVC is more expensive, you will not have to replace it again. It’s also our general practice to only replace the rotted wood boards with PVC, which, when painted, is hard to distinguish from the existing wood on your home. To help keep costs down, we leave the non-rotted wood in place and repair only the rotten wood. Today’s PVC is available to match many historic molding styles to maintain your older Hull home in period style – we can even replace wood gutters with a direct-match PVC gutter!
Hull home rentals – We work with many Hull property owners who rent out their homes. We can do the work in the off-season to help keep your rentals looking great for your tenants and Airbnb guests. We can also paint between Airbnb tenants, so you’re not losing rental money while the painting occurs.

Interiors in Hull, Mass.
Open-floor plan homes that are popular in the newer and renovated homes throughout Hull often need a single color in various tones to help the space together as you move throughout the first floor, and up the stairs to the upper hall. It can be fun to choose a bold color for a powder room or first-floor office.
Older homes in Hull can have unique stained moldings that can stand up for years. We can offer options to touch up the stain or convert the stained moldings and trim to painted moldings for a more modern look. It’s not rare for Hull residents to choose paint colors based on the function of the room (for example a beachy green for the sun porch and brighter or more neutral color for the kitchen). Our crews have lots of experience with horsehair plaster repairs, wallpaper removal, painting white over stained moldings, and most other intricacies of maintaining antique homes that are common to Hull and surrounding South Shore towns.
Our color consultant works with our Hull customers to help give them the confidence to try a color that is a bit more unique than you would try on your own. Of course, we will never push you to paint a color outside of your comfort zone, though!
We have a separate Commercial Painting Division for Hull businesses and Property Managers:
Hull businesses, offices, religious facilities, restaurants, property managers, and stores have worked with CertaPro Painters for years.
And if your Hull office needs to remain open while we’re painting, we offer night and weekend work at no extra charge – this way, business is not disrupted by the painting or carpentry we’re doing.
Our commercial department does its best to understand exactly what’s important to your business and matches the paint and application to those needs. For example, we can use scuff-resistant paint in high-traffic areas like schools and microbicidal paints that actually kill germs in restrooms.

I've used CertaPro and called Lou about a dozen times over the years. I've been happy with the painting.
