Marion exterior painting tips:

Harsh weather and salt air: Because Marion sits right on Buzzards Bay, salty air and coastal storms are an issue that can wear away at your Marion home’s exterior paint. Because of Marion’s climate we use painting and staining products that specifically help combat the wear and tear on your Marion home’s exterior. We suggest painting your Marion exterior every 6-8 years to help protect the wood. Often the only thing that’s needed is a “maintenance coat” every few years to protect the original paint job and freshen up the wood on the exterior.

Some of our favorite products that will help preserve your home in Marion’s coastal climate include:

For exterior trim:  Most often, we choose Sherwin Williams Resilience for Marion exteriors.

For wood clapboards:  Usually we choose Sherwin Williams WoodScapes solid or semi-solid stain for Marion exteriors.

Marion homes should be painted every 5-7 years with a maintenance coat applied at year 3 for added protection. Because deck and porch floors tend to be more susceptible to foot traffic abuse, we recommend maintaining your Marion deck or porch floors every 2 years to keep them protected.

Rotted wood shingles, trim, and clapboards are of particular concern for Marion’s exterior homes. Because of our harsh winters, coastal storm damage, and salt air are so harsh in Marion, wood rot is common on Marion’s homes. If you see rotted wood on your home’s exterior, replace it as soon as possible, because you don’t want water to get inside the wood, and cause further damage to the substrate underneath your home’s wood.

PVC vs. Wood replacement boards – We have carpenters on staff to replace rotted wood on your Marion home before we paint. We often replace rotted wood boards with PVC Composite materials so the rotting does not occur again in that area. While PVC tends to be a more expensive material, knowing you won’t have to replace the board again saves money in the long run. We also don’t have to replace ALL of your trim with PVC, so replacing a board here and there with PVC will not break the bank.  For example, trim that skims the ground often rots first and replacing those boards with PVC is a way to prevent future rot on your Marion home. With that said, we can replace rotted wood with PVC or wood depending on your budget and time-frame you plan to live in your home. When PVC is added to wood trim in a few areas, it is 100% paintable and blends right into your home amongst the other wood trim.

Cedar Shingle Maintenance: Cedar shingles are a durable and impact-resistant material making them popular in Marion. Cedar shingles often cover whole homes or at the very least, one or two sides of Marion exteriors. Many Marion residents prefer to let their shingles “gray” over time and you’ll see this “Nantucket” look throughout town. Other residents prefer to coat their shingles with a semi-solid or solid stain to protect them and keep them from graying. Either way, we are experienced at cedar shingle replacement, maintenance, power washing, and staining. Because cedar shingles tend to grow plants (yep, that means mold and mildew!) you may see some black color on your shingles or behind them (the black is an indication of plant growth). Power washing with a mold-killing detergent will wash off the plants, but if your shingles are in a damp or shady area, the mold or mildew will grow back. We often recommend trimming trees to reduce the shade and help slow mildew growth on your shingles.

Brick homes in Marion:  Brick is not as prominent in Marion as in other towns, but if your Marion home has a brick or partial brick exterior, we can paint your brick home.  As you drive around Marion it’s common to see homes that are wood clapboards on the second floor and brick on the first floor.  We’ve had great success painting the brick the same color as the clapboards or the same color as the brick’s mortar to reduce the visual overload and even out the look of these homes.  Since wood is a common trim on brick homes, we can also paint the trim while leaving the brick its natural color.
