How early in the Spring can I paint the exterior of my home?

Posted on February 15, 2021

Every Spring, lots of people hire us to paint their home’s exterior. Whether you’re putting your home on the market and want just one coat of paint to freshen it up for potential buyers, or you’d like to change the color of your clapboards, shutters, and trim, Spring is a great time to paint your exterior, here’s why:

Spring’s temperatures are perfect:

For exterior paint to be safely applied, average daytime temperatures must be above 50 degrees. This means that April, May, and June are usually ideal months to apply exterior paint to your home.

As of 4/3/21, we are painting outside, albeit inconsistently due to the mad swings in Boston temperatures.  Check our painting schedule that’s updated weekly, with our latest estimate on how soon we could paint for you.

Paint and stain are a protective barrier:

If your home has weathered during the harsh Boston winter we just experienced, a coat of paint can help prolong the life of the wood on your home’s trim, clapboards, and shutters.

Salt air on the coast can eat away at your paint and home:

For South Shore homes in coastal towns such as Duxbury, Marshfield, Scituate, Cohasset, Hingham, and Hull, the salt from the ocean and coastal wind will corrode your house faster than inland homes. Be sure you paint a maintenance coat every 3-5 years if you live on the coast, especially if you see raw or rotted wood on your home.

Putting your home on the market:

If you are planning on painting your home before you put it on the market this Spring or Summer, let us know when we do the quote so we have it painted for your Open House. Generally, our exterior Spring schedule is dependent on the weather because we can’t paint outside when it’s wet, so getting on our painting schedule as early as possible is important if you’re planning on selling your home.

Call us in the Winter, have us paint in the Spring:

Lots of people forget that while we can’t paint outside in the winter, we can still give you a quote during the snowy season.  This way if you hire us to paint for you, you can choose your slot on our Spring schedule once it gets warmer.
