About Popcorn Ceilings in the South Shore and Boston
Popcorn ceilings, also known as stucco, stipple or acoustic ceilings were popular in Boston-area homes that were built in the 1960s and 1970s. Popcorn ceilings are generally found on upstairs bedrooms and hallways because the “popcorn” bumps offer sound-deadening qualities to the space. Popcorn ceilings were popular with builders because they hid imperfections and didn’t require painting.
It’s rare to find popcorn ceilings in common areas like kitchens and dining rooms because of the need for a kitchen ceiling to be cleaned often of grease and dirt. Instead, kitchen ceilings were finished in smoother finishes to make them easier to clean.
The “popcorn ceiling bumps” are created by tiny particles of vermiculite or polystyrene and were applied in fine, medium or coarse textures. Pre-1970s popcorn ceilings may also contain asbestos and due to some regulations that allowed builders to use asbestos into the 1980s, asbestos may also in some homes built in the early 1980s.
Lately, popcorn ceilings’ appeal has diminished in New England, and we are often hired to remove the popcorn texture. Removing a popcorn ceiling allows for a higher-end look and easier cleaning. Since the popcorn ceiling’s nooks and crannies can hide dust and allergens, removing the popcorn ceiling can also be a healthful move.

Popcorn Ceiling Removal Services
We are happy to give you a cost to remove the popcorn-texture from your ceilings and have experience containing the mess it causes. Naturally, we will remove and protect your furniture, walls and floors. After we mist the ceiling, the coarse texture will soften and make it easier for us to scrape off the bumps. Scraping alone won’t make a 100% smooth surface so we also sand the ceiling. Our customers are left with a mostly-smooth surface that we then prime and paint.
