After investing in a professional paint job, you want it to last. Proper after-care helps preserve the finish and extend the lifespan of your paint.
How Long Does Interior Paint Take to Cure?
- Dry to the touch: a few hours.
- Dry enough to use the room: 24 hours
- Fully cured: 2–4 weeks (depending on humidity & temperature)
Avoid washing or scrubbing walls until the paint fully cures or else you risk damaging the new paint.
Cleaning Fresh Walls
Once cured:
- Use a soft cloth or sponge
- Choose gentle soap (like dish soap)
- Avoid abrasive pads or cleaners
- Do not use a Magic Eraser-type sponge, or else you risk scuffing the paint and end up with a spotty-looking wall.
- Always spot test the cleanser first
Flat finishes require extra care because they tend to mark more easily. Luckily, manufacturers have made flat and matte paint more washable over the past decade, so you should be able to remove marks and dirt from recently matte-painted surfaces easily. Always read the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions.
How to Maintain Painted Trim & Woodwork
- Wipe monthly with a damp cloth
- Re-caulk when seams open
- Touch up high-wear spots around doors and stairways
Storing Leftover Paint
For touch-ups, do this:
- Label each can with room name & color
- Store in a climate-controlled space (not the garage)
- Keep lid sealed tightly
- Pour into a quart jar or mason job for small amounts to keep in places like under your kitchen sink for small touch ups.
- Keep a small paint brush with the touch-up paint to make touching up areas easier.
When to Schedule Touch-Ups
Good times to address touch-up work:
- Before holidays or major gatherings
- After moving furniture
- Every 12–18 months in high-use rooms
- When your kids move out of the house
