Exterior Painting Project for Retail Building
CHEF’STORE (Chef’s Supply marketplace) needed a full exterior refresh as part of a rebrand. Scope was the entire building envelope: storefront, sides, high walls, awnings, trellises, dumpster enclosure, and truck loading area. Two employee crews completed the job in two weeks using scissor lifts and boom lifts. CertaPro Painters® of Sacramento was contracted to help with a painting project for a retail building in Sacramento, CA in March of 2021. The project was to include the entire exterior of the Chef’s Supply market place. The project ran for a 2 week duration and utilized 2 employee crews and a scissor lift.
Starting Conditions
- Overgrown ivy on all trellises, hiding structure and blocking paint.
- Metal surfaces (doors, rails, enclosure hardware) showing wear and needing prep before any coating would stick.
- Tall elevations that could not be reached from the ground.
- An operating retail store: customers at the doors, deliveries at the dock, no option to close.
Challenges
Working Hours: Retail hours and customer traffic were the constraint, not just the paint. Crews started early so high-traffic zones (entrances, walkways) were painted when foot traffic was lowest. Business continued as usual.
Height and access: High walls required specialized equipment. Scissor lifts handled most elevations; boom lifts reached remaining awkward areas.
Prep before paint. Ivy had to come off first. Worn metal needed cleaning and prep so the new system would last. Dumpster enclosure combined masonry and metal doors; loading area included green railings and adjacent trellises. All of that was in scope, not an afterthought.

- Ivy removal and surface prep across trellises and adjacent walls.
- Prep of worn metal (storefront, enclosure, rails).

- Gray band along the base of the building.
- Green awnings and trellises as part of the new look.

The Final Result of Our Commercial Painting Project
When the two weeks were up the building no longer looked like a store waiting on maintenance. Ivy was gone from the trellises, worn metal had been prepped and coated, and the exterior read as one three-color scheme: a gray band at the base, green on the awnings and trellises, and a clean field on the walls. The dumpster enclosure—masonry plus metal doors—and the loading-area railings were finished to the same standard instead of left as afterthoughts. Height work was done from scissor and boom lifts; customer doors and the dock stayed usable because crews started early and painted around traffic. CHEF’STORE on 65th stayed open the whole time. The client’s stated reaction was that the new scheme matched the rebrand and that operations were not interrupted.
