Four Ways to Prepare for Your Next Painting Project

Posted on April 16, 2018

Whether it’s making a statement with splashes of vivid color or serving as a faint backdrop to a more muted interior, it’s no secret that painting can dramatically change the mood and design of any home. Embarking on a painting project can seem daunting, but it is much less so if you’ve done a few important tasks beforehand. (Pro Tip: We can help with all of them.)

“We understand that the painting process starts long before colors are selected or brushes are dipped into paint,” says Scott Mossip, Vice President of Operations. “We understand your home is one of your most valuable assets. That’s why our locally owned and independently owned and operated teams across North America work with homeowners at every step of the painting project.”

  1. Figure out a budget.

The first step before beginning any paint job is deciding on a budget. With home improvement projects, it can be difficult to estimate what you’ll need to spend on the particular task you want to complete, and it’s much easier to overspend than it seems. Thankfully, CertaPro Painters® has resources like our online estimator that can help you gauge just how much you’ll need to set aside before our team comes in and works their magic.

  1. Prepare the room or general area.

When it comes to painting, preparation is the key to a beautiful, lasting result. Trimming plants and shrubs prior to exterior projects is a good idea, along with removing items like bikes, hoses, and lawn décor from the work area. If the project is indoors, disconnect any electronics in the area and empty out the room as much as possible. Remove delicate furniture pieces or heirlooms, and take down pictures, paintings, and mirrors from the walls if they won’t be going back up.

  1. Be sure of the paint color.

While you should never be afraid to experiment with colors, it’s crucial to make sure that the color you choose is “the one” before you use it to cover all four walls. Having an entire room (or worse, an entire house!) painted only to be dissatisfied with the result isn’t a good feeling―for you or for us. To avoid looking back with regret or having to repaint, use our MyPaintColors visualizer or talk to the CertaPro Painters® color consultants. A consultation with our experts will help you explore the countless color options to find the shade that works for you and your home.

  1. Choose the right finish.

Paint color isn’t the only decision that matters—finish does too! There are three main types of finishes: gloss, satin, and matte. Gloss sheens are durable and easy to clean, but show more imperfections in the walls. On the other hand, matte or flat paint finishes hide those flaws but can be more easily damaged. A satin or eggshell sheen generally provides a nice middle ground, but no matter what, your choice should be both stylish and practical for the space.

These are just a few considerations as you get ready for your next project. When it comes to execution, like painting the walls and cleaning up afterwards, that’s our job. At CertaPro Painters®, we take our promise of professionalism, care, and quality very seriously, and we are here to tackle the project specifics and logistics so you don’t have to. The only thing you should be worrying about is the amount of guests you’ll be dying to invite over once the transformation is complete.
