In the early 2000s, a municipal government facility in Calgary was built with several air handle units on the rooftop, coated with an alkyd-based industrial paint. Over the years, the paint had a poor reaction with the galvanized metal, leading to fading and chipping. This compromised the durability and aesthetic of the units. Paint Removal
CertaPro used Smart Strip® PRO Paint Remover from Dumond to address the removal of the old paint. This product is specifically designed to strip multiple layers of industrial coatings, including oil, latex, and water-based paints. One of the benefits of Smart Strip® PRO is that it doesn’t contain harmful chemicals like methylene chloride, making it a safer option for the painting crew and the environment. Its ability to remove tough coatings in a single application helped to streamline the process, saving time and reducing labor costs.
Repainting
Once the old paint was stripped, CertaPro selected a two-part paint system that offered high-performance protection against the elements:
- Prime Coat: The team used Sherwin-Williams Pro Industrial Macropoxy 646 Fast Cure as the primer. This product is a high-solids, fast-drying epoxy mastic, designed to protect surfaces from corrosion. It is ideal for industrial environments like this one, as it is durable, suitable for USDA inspected facilities, and acceptable for Canadian Food Processing facilities. The primer forms a strong foundation, ensuring that the topcoat adheres well and provides long-term protection.
- Top Coat: For the topcoat, Sherwin-Williams Hi-Solids Polyurethane was chosen. This two-component polyurethane resin coating provides superior gloss retention and is highly resistant to weathering and corrosion. In an environment like Calgary, where temperature fluctuations can be extreme, it’s crucial to have a paint that can withstand harsh conditions. Hi-Solids Polyurethane offers not only chemical resistance but is also part of a system tested for nuclear irradiation and decontamination, making it a robust solution for this project.
Application
The paint application process required careful planning and precision. CertaPro used industrial sprayers from Graco to ensure even coverage of the primer and topcoat. To access the rooftop units, a lift was brought in, allowing the crew to safely reach the units for preparation and painting. Given the nature of the materials and the environment, safety was a top priority. The crew wore full body suits, spray masks, and gloves to protect themselves from chemical exposure during the stripping and painting process.
