Why Painting a Bathroom is More Difficult (and More Expensive)
Posted on October 6, 2022
Hiring a professional painting company for your interior projects is an investment. While most people understand this going in, they may experience a bit of sticker shock when some estimates wind up more expensive than expected.
Estimate totals include paint, equipment, and other materials, of course, but the bulk of the expense comes from labor costs. Put simply, that means that the longer a job takes, the more expensive it becomes. This is particularly true with bathrooms…
Bathrooms are usually pretty small compared to other areas of the house, and because less surface area means less paint, many people think that professional bathroom painting won’t cost as much as it actually does.
It all comes down to difficulty.
A large room may require more paint, but open walls and large flat surfaces can be rolled or sprayed with minimal masking. In a bathroom, there are fixtures to consider, tight spaces around toilet tanks, tiles, uneven surfaces around showers and cabinets, and plenty of other little details that make the actual painting that much more difficult. Fixtures need to be removed, water lines may need to be shut off, more angles and surface types need more careful masking, and the generally smaller spaces might make moving equipment more difficult too.
You can help keep these costs down by taking care of some of the prep work yourself, especially cleaning! Because showers are steamy, soapy rooms, the residue buildup on walls and ceilings can cause problems with paint adhesion. The more thoroughly cleaned they are, the better the final results of the painting project will be.
You can also take steps to remove fixtures and get your bathroom ready for painting, but it’s a good idea to consult with your painting company beforehand. You may end up creating more work if you remove the wrong things or get in the way of their typical process.
None of this is meant to scare you away from hiring a professional painting company to update your bathroom. In fact, it’s quite the opposite! When you know more about what to expect – and what makes costs add up – you’ll be more prepared for the estimate totals, better understand what you’re investing in, and be able to discuss how to reduce the overall price through some of your own prep.
