About the Project
CertaPro Painters® of Fort Collins completed a comprehensive exterior restoration and repaint project for a home in Fort Collins, CO. The project involved extensive surface preparation, wood replacement, caulking repairs, and a full repaint designed to restore both the appearance and protection of the home’s exterior.
Before work began, the home exhibited significant exterior wear and coating failure across all sides of the property. Lower siding sections had widespread loose and flaking paint that required extensive hand scraping prior to repainting.
Caulking had failed at multiple transition points, including window trim-to-siding joints, fascia and soffit seams, and vertical trim connections, leaving the home vulnerable to moisture intrusion. Several wood boards on the rear, right, and left elevations showed deterioration and required replacement before painting could begin.
Additional problem areas included roofline siding gaps and holes, tape residue on upper trim surfaces, and noticeable surface chalking from prolonged weather exposure. These conditions required thorough cleaning, repair, sealing, and priming before any finish coatings could be applied.
PROJECT SCOPE:
The project began with a complete exterior power wash to remove chalking, dirt, mildew, mold, and loose debris from all surfaces. Once cleaned, all loose and failing paint was hand scraped, followed by spot priming of all exposed substrate areas.
Failed caulking was removed and replaced throughout the property, including around windows, doors, fascia, soffits, and trim joints. Multiple wood components – including horizontal siding boards, trim boards, and corner boards – were replaced and primed prior to finish painting.
Two coats of paint were applied to the siding, soffits, porch ceiling, and garage doors. Trim coatings were applied to fascia, gutters, downspouts, door frames, porch posts, gable vents, and sidelight windows, while the front entry door received a separate accent color application. The home’s foundation was also painted to match the siding for a cohesive appearance.
Throughout the project, the crew carefully protected landscaping, flower beds, walkways, the driveway, porch surfaces, and exterior fixtures.
CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS:
One of the primary challenges involved the extent of wood damage present across three elevations of the home. Damaged boards had to be identified, removed, replaced, and primed before surface preparation and finish painting could continue.
Roofline areas required additional attention due to holes, gaps, and sealing needs near flashing and adjacent materials. Careful preparation ensured these vulnerable areas were properly sealed without disturbing surrounding components.
The project also included trim areas with tape residue that needed delicate cleaning, as well as silicone-caulked sections that required priming to ensure proper topcoat adhesion.
Since the property included pets and a gated yard, the crew coordinated carefully throughout production to maintain secure access points and ensure the safety of the homeowners’ animals during all work phases.
