How to Get the Best Exterior Trim Look for Your Home

Posted on January 13, 2023

Refreshing the outside of your house is a big undertaking. Because the trim of your home often takes the most abuse from fingers and the elements, it tends to get the most dinged up. It is also one of the harder aspects of the home to paint. If you’re looking to do this project all on your own, you can expect some extra difficulties. In fact,  Sometimes you can make your exterior paint job last a few years longer by updating the painting on your trim. If you hire professionals, though, to change your look with trim painting can be as easy as 1-2-3.

In this article, our professionals will provide you with our favorite ways to change your look with trim painting. We’ll also provide you with your next steps to the home of your dreams. Let’s get started!

Contrasts

Before you start, decide if you want your trim to stand out against the house, or blend in. Both options are good choices and depend on your style preferences. To blend the colors together, you’ll want to pick similar shades to each other. While you won’t want the same color, it needs to be several shades deeper or lighter to read as different, not a mistake. This means it will look like a finished, thought out look.

For high contrast, use a color wheel for direction. Colors directly across from each other are high contrast and complementary pairs. So for example, if your house choice is green, your high contrast options are in the red family. If your house is blue, you’ll be working with orange.

To achieve a high contrast option that always works, go with black. The color can be paired with any color that you have on your home. As an added benefit, black reads as neutral and will work on any home style.

Neutrals

Neutrals are popular for homes because they work well without jarring the eyes. Choose a primary color in a bright tone then use a greige (gray and beige) color as the trim. The neutral trim will tone down the brighter color.

Don’t Forget You

Whether you’re keeping your house or preparing for a sale, remember the house is still yours. Choose colors that appeal to your taste. You should feel happy coming home to it, no matter what the color specialists say.

Our Trim Painting Tips

Painting Efficiently:

Begin with the top corner of the door trim. Paint along the side edge where the trim meets the wall. Do all of the outsides of the trim before moving on. Once the outside is done, go back to the top corner and paint the face. Continue until the door frame is complete.
