So, what color goes best with gray?

The Best Color Combinations for Gray

Finding the best color combinations that go well with gray is a tricky problem. The easier idea is narrowing down the colors you enjoy together because gray goes well with many different color combinations as a shade. Soft or lighter grays tend to do better with deeper, darker colors, whereas vibrant colors compliment darker grays wonderfully. Gray tones are everywhere along the monochrome spectrum that does not include white and black, so there’s an unprecedented number of shades to work through.

The undertone has a strong effect on grays, so keep in mind that it can be a good idea to pair cooler grays with cool colors, such as blues and greens, while warmer grays are paired with more vibrant colors, such as reds, oranges, and yellows. There is also the fact that grays look great with other grays, so the monochromatic scheme is always a pleasing palette.

1.    Gray and Yellow

Though it may not be the first color to come to mind, yellow is an excellent pairing for gray. Both have a wide range of colors that will complement one another. This is at the top of the list of best color combinations because of how dynamic both of these can be while paired together. A deep gray looks great with a warm yellow like a sunflower or a lighter gray with a dark yellow or goldenrod.

2.    Gray and Black

Black presents an excellent pairing with gray, especially a darker shade of gray. This is because the two tones create a rather bold element to the space you are creating. Monochromatic palettes are often the perfect accompaniment to using natural-toned accents in the decor or vibrant colors when used sparingly.

3.    Gray and White

White and gray offer a great color combination and one that is found in nature. Many kinds of marble and granite are a comprehensive, varied blend of white and gray to illustrate this fact. Light gray and crisp white are among the best color combinations, but so is charcoal gray with white.

Be careful with this pairing; an equal split between white and gray can make the room feel cold or artificial. It is recommended to use a 25 percent split of either white or gray or ensure a textured element to help create depth within your space.

4.    Gray and Pink

Pinks and grays have been one of the best color combinations for decades. Grays often bring a lot of cool tones to a room, so the warmth of pink provides instant brightness to the space. Blush pink is a great color for a muted gray, though any natural pink pairs well.

5.    Gray and Reds

Grey and red. These two colors go great together, though you have to use them sparingly. Deep charcoal is great with vibrant tones of red found in accents or a room’s furniture. If you use more natural hues of red or deeper tones, shift the gray to a lighter color to subdue the overall feel of the room.

A Quick Note on Colors

When colors are used, a careful balance needs to be considered. The more striking a color is, the more sparing it should be used when paired with gray. This is because colors can quickly overtake the shade.

6.    Gray and Blues

Navy is the perfect color for any gray. A soft, dove gray with navy warms up the room, making it a comfortable space for any occasion. When navy is with a darker gray, such as a shadow or pebble gray, the blue cuts through, bringing an almost startling flare to the room with a bolder tone.

7.    Gray and Orange with White

One of the best color combinations is a trifecta. Gray, orange, and white. These three go together perfectly. When used in an all-gray paint scheme, especially with varied tones of gray, orange accents will make the shades truly pop. Mid tones and deeper tones of gray are stunning with orange, but with the vibrance of bright white contrast, you’ll see just how much the orange is brought into focus.

8.    Gray and… Gray!

Gray is stunning when joined together with contrasting shades of gray. As mentioned in the section above, varying shades of gray provide a terrific paint scheme. This is because grays can be so drastically different from one another that they look masterful when used appropriately. Darker grays that include different hues, a deep blue-gray, for example, can offer a rich contrast to a softer gray. The room will come to life when joined by natural highlights, such as metals or wood.
