Shutters that Show Out with Crisp Coastal Colors

Posted on May 26, 2023

Your Northwest Florida home’s trim, the door, fascia, and shutters all coordinate with the exterior to create an inspired aesthetic. You may have owned your home a few years now and are thinking it’s time to decide whether to restore, paint, or simply replace your home’s shutters. There are several things to consider at this juncture.

  1. Color scheme: This is a great time to update the house’s look.-Black is a trendy color due to its ability to create a sharp, crisp contrast against light and neutral backgrounds (white, beige, gray, pastels so often seen in Northwest Florida).
    • Another popular choice for shutters is navy, similar to black but giving that nautical, coastal feel.
    • Go Bold! Many people in the Sunshine State choose to accent the home with pops of cheer using tones like coral, aqua, sunny yellow, and pinks. Think of the colors of a sunset on the beach and be inspired.
    • Color choice is personal and relates to your home’s current exterior, décor, and how it fits in the neighborhood. Have fun with it!
  2. Material:
    • Wood: Even if reasonably old, wood shutters can often be restored, sanded, and repainted. They’ll look as good as new. Especially if they have designs or are ones you are especially fond of that fit your home’s personality, restoring wood shutters may be the best bet and save you money in the long run.
    • Vinyl:  Vinyl shutters can easily be sanded, cleaned, and repainted, which is the most cost-effective option. Your home gets a quick and easy makeover, and you’ll be delighted at the vast difference it makes!
  3. DIY? Consider safety and prep work:
    • Be careful on ladders!
    • Most shutters will need to be removed if they are working shutters, not simply decorative ones. If decorative, you will need to be extremely careful to tape off all surrounding exterior, and even then, drips and spills are common.
    • When removing shutters, mark all windows and openings to ensure you place the shutters back correctly.
    • Shutters will often need restoration work.
    • Strip or sand old paint if wooden. Clean vinyl thoroughly. Prime if painting a lighter color.
    • Use several light coats; let dry thoroughly between.
