How much does it cost to paint a home?
It’s the first question anyone asks when they begin to consider painting their home. While a seemingly simple question, there are a lot of variables that can affect the final cost of a professional quality paint job:
- Size and Number of Windows and Doors: A room’s size and number of windows and doors can affect the amount of paint needed as well as the time and labor it takes to complete a job.
- Condition: Holes in the drywall, dented baseboards, scratched doorframes, or marks in the trim or molding can all contribute to added prep time, materials, and cost.
- Number of Coats: Depending on the current color and the desired color of the walls, more than one coat may be needed. We usually budget for two coats, but if the room is going from a very dark color to a neutral or light color, more coats may be needed. Our goal is to help you keep costs down, so we are happy to provide the cost for additional coats before the work has started and then make a determination after each coat is applied whether or not additional coats are necessary.
- Set-up Time and Access: Some projects may require movement or covering of bookshelves, entertainment centers, or couches that take up a large portion of the space. You can help keep costs down by removing furniture and belongings before work begins.
- Accent Walls: Accent walls are a wonderful way to add a pop of color and personality to a room, but they do require a separate set of materials, more paint, and extra time to properly prep the area so the final paint job is crisp and clean.
- Ceiling Height: A typical 8-foot wall is easily accessible to our painters, but taller ceilings call for extra paint, time, and equipment to neatly and safely paint.
- Complexity of Trims and Doors: More complex doors and trim, such as dental molding (vs flat baseboards) or 16-panel doors (vs 4-panel doors) call for more prep and more labor-intensive painting and can add to the cost.
We’ve put together his list of average paint costs for common rooms and sizes to help give you an idea of what your project may cost. Of course, each home is different and these are just average costs. We can evaluate your individual project, discuss options, and answer any questions at a free remote or in-person estimate.
