Stain Color Options for Backyard Projects
Posted on June 14, 2021
The elements, extreme temperatures, and foot traffic will wear away at a wood deck resulting in a faded and unappealing look. It is recommended that you stain your deck at least every 2 to 3 years. When setting out to stain, it is important to inspect it taking note of any loose screws, splintered and uneven wood. You can then clean your deck by using soap and water or a deck cleaner. This helps to eliminate oil or other stains as well as dirt and grime.
Pressure washing is also effective but be careful as it can damage the wood and prolong the drying process. Sanding the deck will smooth it over and help even things out as well as take care of splintered or damaged wood. It is recommended to use a coarse sandpaper between 60 and 80 grit. This will prepare the deck by stripping it of the old stain. You may want to consider applying sealer to prevent water damage.
When you are ready to stain, it is important to consider factors such as age, wood type, and stain type. You can use an oil base as a more affordable option which will help protect against rain while conditioning the wood. Acrylic based stains are water based and are advantageous as a cleaner, faster drying, more environmentally friendly option.
When choosing a stain color, it is recommended that you find the most dominant color in your backyard and use its complement for your stain. Identify your deck’s wood type and consider matching your stain with it. If you prefer a different color consider using a semi-transparent or solid stain.
Gray
Gray is a solid choice for adding a nice, neutral base color for surrounding brighter colors and works well with contrast colors to balance out your backyard.
Brown
Similar to the natural color of the wood itself, a shade of brown can provide a depth and warmth while maintaining the natural beauty of the wood.
Red
A beautiful dark shade of red can be accentuated with surrounding lighter colors. Dark reds can create a busy, alluring effect suitable for parties and barbeques.
Blue
Lighter blue stains can bring a coastal feel to your backyard. Blue hues provide a relaxing, calming near the ocean theme that is appealing and inviting.
Green
A nice light green can bring out warm undertones and complement the foliage in your backyard. Various shades of green can highlight the life in your yard, especially in the spring and summer seasons.
