How to Prep Your Home for Spring Painting

Posted on March 21, 2022

The warmer weather approaching means getting your house into its best shape. However, painting the exterior of your home is no small undertaking. It can be tempting to skimp on the preparation and move right to the task at hand. There are a few vital steps you should take before painting the exterior of your home. In this article, our professionals will guide you through our top three steps to prepare your home exterior for a spring painting service.

A clean house will accept paint. You need to spend time pressure washing the entire area that your painters will work on. You’ll need to allow plenty of dry time before moving to the next step. That also means if it rains, your drying starts over. Chalking, dirt, mildew and other messy spots should be completely cleaned. You may want to protect shrubbery with plastic sheets while you’re cleaning.

Repair Cracks and Chips

Now address any issues with the previous paint. Areas that are cracked or peeling need to be scraped off and sanded down to a flat surface. Prime areas that have been repaired for best paint adhesion.

Cover Surrounding

Once things are clean and repaired, you’ll want to make sure to cover any areas that you do not want paint on. Paint can be messy, especially when you’re applying to large surfaces such as the exterior of your home. Be sure to cover any electrical outlets, plants, and air conditioners. You’ll want to lock these covers down with tape, too. If you’re painting your home interior, don’t forget about the ceiling! Light fixtures and fans should be properly covered or put away before the painting process begins.

Choose the Right Color

Color choice is important. You’ll want a color that appeals to you and provides a long-lasting and dirt-hiding color. Traditional choices include grey, white, yellow and light blue. The most popular color for 2022 includes Sherwin Williams 2022 Color of the Year Evergreen Fog. The soft green pairs especially well with white trim, which has been rising in popularity over the last few years. If you have wood accents on your home exterior, this color will look even better.
