Projects that Use Leftover Paint
Posted on August 12, 2019
We all have extra paint sitting in our storage areas. Did you know that paint expires? Don’t waste it, use it! Here are some projects that use leftover paint you already have. That can sitting there is a good reason to take on a new project. Bring your brush and creativity and try one of these quick paint projects.
Store It
We know the idea is to get rid of the old paint cans. If you do decide to store it, do it right. This will make it stay good for longer. To maintain viability, you need to keep air out of the can. Move your paint to the smallest container it will fit in. Experts have had good success with mason jars. Since they are clear, you can see the color. Use a sharpie to write the color, date and other information on the lid.
Primer
Lighter colored leftovers can be used as a primer. It will even out any repairs on the wall and provide enough tooth to give you a great result. This works especially if you are looking to paint the wall a similar, or the same, shade.
Pro Tip: You can use light or white colors as primer for light paint and dark colors to prime for darker tones.
Pop of Color
If your leftovers are a more vivid color, why not create a pop of color in a more subtle room? Make an accent wall for an unexpected surprise. Think outside of the box. Add color to the interior of a closet or a wall behind the bathroom door. Kitchen islands make a perfect place to put a new color.
Paint A Canvas
Are you an artist? Try your hand at painting a canvas that’s perfectly paired with your wall colors. Lifescapes are a great use of color. Have little (or no) talent? Go abstract. Jackson Pollock sold at least a painting or two.
Create a Chalkboard
Chalkboard paint can be made from any latex paint. Make an interactive coloring wall for your kids, or a cabinet for grocery list. Here’s how to do it:
- 1/2 cup acrylic paint
- 1 tablespoon unsanded grout
- mixing cup
- spoon
- paint brush
- surface to paint
Still want a few more ideas:
- Dip chair legs.
- Stencil the floor.
- Use it on a window frame.
- Paint the inside of a door.
- Make your bathroom pipes pop.
