What is EIFS?
Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems, or EIFS, is a type of wall cladding applied to a building’s exterior surfaces. EIFS is also referred to as “synthetic stucco” because it looks very similar to traditional stucco, but it is actually quite different. The main difference is that stucco consists of two, and sometimes only one, thick layer of original stucco spread over a mesh wire. EIFS, on the other hand, consists of a total of six different layers. It’s also more expensive than stucco. Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems have many advantages when compared to other common exterior finishes, including:
- More energy-efficient than conventional stucco over time
- Weighs around 80% less than traditional stucco, despite the number of layers
- Flexible, making it less susceptible to damage from drastic changes in temperature
- More durable than traditional stucco
- Can shed water and be sealed at the windows and other openings, making it hard for water to leak in
- Can be installed in a variety of textures and colors to make your home’s exterior stand out
If you have a home with an EIFS finish, you might want to reach out to CertaPro Painters® of Rockville Potomac who can inspect your EIFS system and ensure it’s up to standards.
Colors for Your Stucco or EIFs Home
When painting your stucco or EIFS home, you may be having a hard time deciding what color would look best. In our experience, there are some colors that we just know will look good on stucco. Tan and white are the most popular choices on stucco homes here in Rockville and Potomac. If you are looking for a pop of color, yellow looks great on stucco. Yellow can be a little harder when it comes to finding the right shade so we would recommend doing a patch test before painting your entire home. We also see a lot of home owners pair the light painted stucco with darker accents such as black or brown. No matter what colors you decide, we are here to help. If you have a stucco home in Maryland that needs to be repaired or painted, give us a call today!

Common Questions About Stucco and EIF Painting Projects
How often should you paint a stucco house?
Stucco should be painted every five to ten years, depending on the environmental factors the stucco has been exposed to. It’s important to paint and upkeep exterior stucco surfaces to prevent cracks and other damage from forming over time. See our guide on how often to paint stucco for more information.
What is the Difference Between Stucco and EIFs?
While EIFS and Stucco share the same sleek appearance, they are very different from each other. One consists of two layers and has a longer lifespan, and the second, although it is multi-layered, is not as sturdy. To the untrained eye, these two appear to be one and the same. However, with some training, one can learn to tell EIFS and Stucco apart.
What prep work is done before applying stucco paint?
The stucco surfaces should be cleaned and free of dust and dirt, this can be done with a brush or with power washing equipment. Once clean, cracks and imperfections are patched with caulking or stucco repair products. After surface prep is complete, trim lines are taped off and the area is ready to be painted.
Can CertaPro Painters® repair cracked or damaged stucco?
Yes, for most types of minor stucco damage, we can repair the stucco as part of a painting project. In some cases of severe damage, a stucco specialist may be needed.
What are the trending exterior paint colors for stucco homes?
Traditionally stucco is painted in natural colors like white, gray, beige, or tan. In some areas, blue is also popular for stucco exteriors.
What kind of paint is best for stucco exteriors?
Acrylic latex products are best for stucco painting projects. There are options when it comes to product selection, so be sure to ask for recommendations during your initial estimate appointment with your local independently owned and operated CertaPro Painters® franchised business.
