Exterior Painting and Deck Post Staining Case Study
by CertaPro Painters® of Roanoke, VA
PROJECT INVOLVEMENT
CertaPro Painters® of Roanoke, VA, completed an exterior painting and staining project in Roanoke, VA, in October 2026. The decking support posts had not previously been stained, while the lintels and generator base had chipped and peeling paint. The doors and door frames also showed normal wear and tear.
All surfaces designated for painting or staining were washed before work began. The decking support posts were spray-washed, while the lintels, window frames, generator base, doors, and door frames were handwashed to remove dirt and debris. Most of the posts passed the water test, and light scuff sanding was completed where remnants of mill glaze remained.
The back decking support posts were stained with Sherwin-Williams SuperDeck Solid Color Stain, matched to the customer’s existing stain. The generator base was painted with Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint in a gloss finish, with the color matched to the stain on the posts for a consistent appearance.
The lintels along the right, left, and rear sides of the home were painted gloss white using Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint. The project also included painting three doors and their frames within the screened-in back porch, the side entrance door on both sides, two doors and frames at the open back decking, and a basement-level passage door. The storm door was excluded. The vent above the garage was also painted gloss white with Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint.
CHALLENGES
The project required additional surface preparation to address remnants of mill glaze on the decking support posts. Light scuff sanding was completed where needed to prepare the posts for staining. The team also needed to clean and prepare the different surfaces before applying coatings. The generator base was color-matched to the solid stain used on the decking support posts to maintain a consistent appearance.
PROJECT TIMELINE
The project was completed in one day by Marbel and Luis’ crew.
SPECIAL EQUIPMENT AND TECHNIQUES
The crew spray-washed the decking support posts and handwashed the lintels, window frames, generator base, doors, and door frames. A water test was performed on the posts to help determine their readiness for staining, and light scuff sanding was completed where mill glaze remained. The generator base was also color-matched to the stain used on the posts.
FINAL RESULTS
The project included staining the back decking support posts and painting the generator base, lintels, doors, door frames, window frames, and garage vent. The generator base was matched to the post stain, while the other painted surfaces received a gloss white finish. Check out the photos below to see the completed work.
