Common Drywall Problems here in Northwest Florida

Drywall damage happens in most homes. Sometimes it can be minor damage and can be some massive damage as well. When repairing drywall, a proper assessment must be done to ensure the core of the problem is handled and the repair is not noticeable. The CertaPro Painters® of Northwest Florida have the experience to complete your drywall repairs accurately and quickly.
Many different things can damage drywall. It can be as simple as a hole from a nail that was in the wall or can be severe, like water damage. Here are the most common damages to drywall:

Holes

Holes can be caused by things such as nails or screws that had been in the wall or can be larger from something slamming into the wall creating a large hole.

Removals

Pieces of drywall can come off of the wall when you remove items from the wall. Whether it be wallpaper, tile, or any other object you might have on the wall, using adhesive.

Water Damage and Moisture

Water damage can be caused by humid air, as we have here in the Northwest region of Florida. It can be more severe when caused by things like leaking pipes. Water damage is cause for serious concern, as it can create health issues since if it is not taken care of promptly, it can start growing mold. It can also lead to other issues, such as creating cracks in the drywall.

Popping Nails

Nails that pop through the drywall are very common. If the nails weren't appropriately installed to a joint or stud, they can pop out of the drywall and look very unappealing.

Dented Corner Bead

The drywall corner bead is a metal strip that joins two pieces of drywall at the corner. It can get dented from impact or contact stress over time.

Furniture Scuffs

Primarily a cosmetic issue, rearranging furniture without proper care can cause holes or scrapes in the drywall.

Benefits of Repairing Drywall

There are several benefits of repairing drywall. Most of the time, with minor repairs, the benefit is primarily cosmetic. However, if you have any cracks or moisture in the drywall, avoiding repairs can lead to structural or health hazards.
Leaving even smaller holes unrepaired can result in more damage over time. Keeping up with your drywall repairs can prevent major issues from coming about in the future, keeping your home looking nice and helping to increase the value.

Priming Drywall for Paint is Crucial in Northwest Florida

Using primer on drywall after a repair is a step that should not be forgotten, especially in our area down the Emerald Coast, Pensacola, Destin, and surrounding areas, where the humidity is almost always high. Primer will help to seal the drywall, preventing the paint from peeling in humid conditions.
CertaPro Painters® of Northwest Florida will be sure to complete every step necessary for a beautiful finish. The process of priming varies depending on the size of the job. Some larger jobs may require priming an entire wall to complete the process correctly.

Common Questions About Drywall Repair Projects

How do you repair drywall?

Surface cracks can easily be covered with some drywall compound using a putty knife. However, deep cracks will need to be held together with fiberglass tape to ensure it doesn’t continue to pull apart and break the seal again. No matter what kind of crack you’re repairing, you should have a fine-grit sanding sponge to clean up the drywall compound and paint to cover it up.
The type of damage will determine what drywall repair technique is needed. Small dents and dings can be smoothed over with spackle and paint. Water-damaged or impact-damaged drywall will be cut out and patched with new drywall segments. Repairs are then finished with light sanding and a fresh coat of matching paint.

How much does drywall repair cost?

There is no set price for drywall repair since every job is unique. CertaPro Painters® of Northwest Florida would love to come out and assess the damage to your drywall and give you a drywall repair estimate.

How can I tell if my drywall should be repaired?

If you see any visible damage to your walls, chances are you need repairs. If you see any moisture spots, cracks, holes, or scrapes, this is the only time you will need repairs to restore the integrity and look of the wall.

How do you fix cracks in drywall?

Many superficial cracks are easy fixes and can be done in a few minutes without worrying about future damage. You can identify surface cracks by looking at how much of the drywall has cracked. Drywall cracks typically occur at seams, and it’s nothing more than the drywall compound shrinking after it dries. Use a knife or the corner of your putty knife to carefully cut into the crack to see if the seam has pulled. If it hasn’t, you can fill the crack with drywall compound.
A crack where the seam has started pulling apart will need to be held together with fiberglass tape, which will ensure it doesn’t continue pulling apart after the compound dries and shrinks once again. Our drywall repair services can help if you’re unsure about the extent of the damage you’re dealing with.
If you need to use fiberglass tape, use it the same way you would if you were taping a piece of paper together. Cover the length of the crack with as much of it in the middle of the tape as possible. Apply your drywall compound using your putty knife. Don’t worry about using fiberglass tape if you’re fixing a surface crack. Hold your putty knife at a 70-degree angle to get the best coverage and pressure to fill the crack. After the compound has dried, clean up the area using your sanding sponge. You can then paint over the area to make it look as good as new.
