Helping the University Help Athletes

The University of Tennessee’s Anderson Training Center is a state-of-the-art facility that supports the athletic development of its student-athletes, particularly those in the football program. Located on the Knoxville campus, it features cutting-edge weight rooms, rehabilitation and medical services, meeting rooms, and player lounges, providing a comprehensive physical training and recovery environment. Opened in 2013 and named after Tennessee supporter Brenda Lawson Anderson, the center plays a crucial role in the university’s efforts to maintain a competitive and high-performing athletics program.

Condition of the Building

Our project focused on repairing walls affected by decal removal and enhancing the overall appearance of the training center. We restored damaged areas by patching and preparing the walls and painting unfinished block surfaces to create a polished, cohesive look. Additionally, we painted the accent bands and undersides of the balconies throughout the interior practice field.

Project Involvement

This project involved removing existing wall decals, repairing any damage left behind on the walls, and addressing imperfections to restore a smooth surface. Once repairs are complete, we painted unfinished block areas, giving them a clean and uniform look.

Special Challenges

Due to the unique challenges of working in the indoor practice field, we had to carefully coordinate our efforts around the schedules of student-athletes to minimize disruptions to their training routines. This required close collaboration with facility managers and flexible working hours, often extending long into the day and evening, to ensure that our work was completed efficiently without interfering with their daily activities. By adapting to the athletes’ needs and maintaining a steady pace, we were able to complete the project while keeping interruptions to a minimum and preserving the flow of their practice schedules.

Equipment & Techniques

Painting the indoor practice field required the use of two 24′-26′ foot scissor lifts and one 40′-46′ foot articulating lift to reach high and difficult areas, such as walls and ceiling structures. To protect the finished concrete floor, we placed lift mats underneath the lifts, ensuring no damage occurred during the project. These mats provided a stable and safe surface for the heavy equipment while allowing us to work efficiently across the entire space. This approach not only ensured a high-quality paint job in hard-to-reach areas but also preserved the integrity of the facility’s flooring throughout the process.
