Posted on April 12, 2021
It’s a great time of year in Knoxville to start in on exterior house maintenance projects. Spring maintenance can include a variety of projects, we took some time to compile 6 tasks every homeowner should consider this time of year.
Each spring, take some time to inspect each of the following items on your home:
Check Gutters for Blockages
Gutters will accumulate debris and grime over time. Some homes may need multiple gutter cleanings each year. Neglecting a blocked gutter can result in significant damages to the soffits, roof, and foundations of homes. It’s and important item that should get checked every spring.
Get a ladder and check that the gutters are free from debris. Then make sure your downspouts are in good condition and positioned to drain the water away from your foundation. If you need to test them, use a hose to spray some water down the gutter and downspout.
Most of the time gutters are cleaned by hand by scooping out and debris in the gutter. There are specialized gutter cleaning tools that can make quick work of the job. A leaf blower can also work to blow out leaves and lighter materials.
Inspect the roof.
Roof integrity and water resistance is essential to the underlying structure of the home. Its a good idea to check the roof closely at least twice a year to make sure no new leaks have formed. The winter season is the most common time of year for new issues to arise. Winter roof problems are usually related to ice forming and breaking sections of the roof.
Look closely for any warping, cracks, or loose shingles when inspecting a roof. Also check from the inside of the home if possible in the attic to see if any water has made its way to the interior. Roof problems can be difficult to fix yourself, you may need to contact a licensed roofing contractor to help with the repairs.
Check seals around windows and doors.
Similar to problems with roofs, windows and doors are also areas where winter weather can cause damages or new leaks to form. Each year inspect the seals around doors and windows. Move your hand slowly around the frame and see if you can feel any drafts from airflow coming in from a damaged seal.

Inspect your paint.
Paint is the first line of defense against the elements outside. Besides making your house beautiful, it creates a protective film to keep moisture out of your substrate. While you are inspecting the outside of your home for spring, take note of any areas where your paint could be failing. Any cracking, peeling, bubbling or chalking should be addressed further.
