Make your Home Look New Again: Siding Painting for Aluminum or Vinyl

Posted on February 15, 2019

It used to be that once you choose your siding, you had committed to that color and style until it was time to replace it. Painting technology has developed and now that isn’t the case. You can make your home look new again with siding painting for aluminum or vinyl.

Painting for Aluminum Siding

When your aluminum siding has a chalky layer or fades beyond recognition, you may think it is done for. Don’t start ripping it down, you can paint it. The key to a good adhesion is in the prep work you do before painting aluminum siding.

First, make sure your siding is clean before you can begin your project. Power wash it with a trisodium phosphate cleanser and make sure you rinse it very thoroughly. Now, as long as there is no metal showing through the current color, you can begin to paint – no primer necessary – with a high quality exterior acrylic based paint. Latex based paints contain ammonia which can make bubbles and result in peeling paint; acrylic will give you an even finish. Finally, keep in mind, the metal of the siding will conduct heat very well and cause the paint to dry too quickly. Paint in indirect sunlight, when possible.

Painting for Vinyl Siding

Vinyl siding is a budget friendly and durable solution for the exterior of your home. Being said, it’s not indestructible, so if the color fades or picks up stains, don’t scrap it; pick up a brush and paint your vinyl siding. Before you begin, check your weather for too much sun, wind, cold, etc. It’s important the day is right to take on a project like this. When painting on vinyl siding, you must choose the right paint. It should contain urethane and acrylic resins and be a similar or lighter shade than is currently on the siding. Next, clean the siding including removal of any chalkiness, mold, mildew, debris and anything else sticking to your home. Prime and prime again. Two coats of primer may be necessary if the current paint is pitted or porous. Finally, paint your siding. Two coats could be necessary with up to 24 hours in between to dry.

With the work you have put in your siding should be looking good for years to come. Many homeowners have had up to 10 more years with their current siding thanks to a good preparation and solid coat of paint.
