Paint Metal Patio Furniture In 3 Easy Steps

Posted on July 14, 2019

Give your patio furniture new life from its weathered and rusted past. A new color and paint job can make your porch look completely made over. Here is how to paint metal patio furniture in 3 easy steps.

For those of you who like to find rusty gold at the flea market or a garage sale, gather up some metal patio furniture and follow our steps outlined below to create a new backyard that is sure to wow your friends.

Prepare

This project will require a few items and some elbow grease. Look through your patio furniture or peeling and cracked paint. Scrape the pieces loose with a wire brush. Remove any sharp areas or rust that you see. Some painters choose to use an orbital sander to make faster work of this. If you choose this, use protective eyewear. We recommend 60 grit sandpaper, then move to 120.

Clean

Now that you’ve removed rust and chipping paint, clean up the furniture. Use a bucket of water to give it a good bath. Your paint won’t be able to stick to dust so you’ll need to make sure it’s free from it.

Wait for your furniture to completely air dry. This is especially important if it has crevices as you might see in a faux basket weave.

Paint

It’s up to you whether you want to brush or spray paint your items. Our pros recommend Rust-Oleum or similar paint that is made for rusty projects. It ensures the new paint will stick to the furniture. The paint will hold up to the elements better and give you a bonus primer included.

Tips

  • Make sure you move the furniture around as you paint. Flip it, tip it and move it to make sure all areas get a good coating. This will avoid further rust developing after you paint.
  • If you are using a drop cloth and spray paint, the wind is a real danger. Move your items to the center of the drop cloth and be very aware of overspray. You could end up with a patio floor the same color as your furniture.
  • Allow at least 24 hours before you use your new furniture. Particular areas of it could take a bit longer to dry if there is a build-up of paint. Don’t ruin your new summer shorts by sitting too fast!
