CertaPro Painters® of Cedar Rapids IA completed a full exterior restoration project for the Johnson County Livestock Barn in Iowa City, IA. As a highly visible agricultural and community-use facility, maintaining the barn’s appearance and protecting the structure from ongoing weather exposure were important priorities for the property.
Before work began, the barn’s exterior showed visible fading, weathering, and general wear caused by years of exposure to the elements. The existing paint had deteriorated over time, and multiple exterior boards had become damaged and needed replacement before painting could begin. Because the building serves as an important community landmark and agricultural facility, the goal was to restore a clean, professional appearance while improving long-term durability and protection.
PROJECT SCOPE:
The project involved extensive surface preparation, carpentry repairs, priming, and repainting across the entire barn exterior. The crew replaced 82 damaged exterior boards before beginning the painting process to ensure the structure had a solid foundation for the new coatings.
After repairs were completed, all exterior surfaces were thoroughly power washed to remove dirt, debris, and loose paint. Once cleaned, the team scraped remaining failing paint and spot prepared all areas as needed before applying primer to every side of the barn.
The main barn surfaces then received two coats of classic barn red paint, while the windows, soffits, trim boards, and fascia boards were finished with two coats of barn white paint to complete the traditional agricultural appearance.
CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS:
One of the largest challenges of the project was the amount of wood replacement required before painting could begin. Replacing 82 boards throughout the barn exterior required careful coordination to ensure the repairs blended properly with the existing structure and provided a consistent finished appearance.
The size and height of the barn also required careful planning throughout the preparation and painting process to maintain efficiency and safety while working on elevated surfaces.
SPECIAL EQUIPMENT & TECHNIQUES:
The crew utilized commercial-grade power washing equipment to properly clean the barn before painting. Professional paint sprayers helped provide even coverage across the large exterior surfaces, while scissor lifts allowed the team to safely access elevated sections of the structure for repairs, priming, and finish painting.
