Drywall Repair and Painting Tips and Tricks
Posted on January 20, 2022
Drywall repair can be the first step in transforming the interior of your home. Picture and shelf removals, water damage, and unplanned holes and cracks can wreak havoc on your walls, requiring the right touch to properly bring them back to their previous condition.
The repairs can be a bit trickier than one may initially think, demanding a meticulous and experienced approach. Repairing your walls without the recommended methods can leave uneven and unappealing sections, or even structural damage. CertaPro’s experts have a long history in drywall repair, ensuring that the correct steps are taken to mitigate any form of disaster. In this article, we’ll share some of our top tips for repairing your drywall and getting the paint finish of your dreams.
Use Self-Priming Filler
Patches made with traditional patching materials need to be primed with a sealing-type primer before painting. Otherwise the patched areas could show through the finished paint job as foggy spots. But if you patch with a self-priming patching material, you can avoid this extra step. There are several brands; just look for the words ‘self-priming’ or ‘with primer’ on the container.
Deal with Cracks
Look around windows and doors for cracks in the wall and previous paint. Fixing the cracks can be difficult and cause further cracks if painted over. A spray on crack repair is an option to cover the crack and get a flat paint job. The spray makes a flexible cover for the crack and will save the crack from showing through, at least for a temporary fix.
If the crack is big enough to have an open area, use patching compound to fill it, then use the spray over top. The double layer will give you the longest lasting option for a crack repair. You can find crack repair spray at paint stores or hardware stores.
Patch the Holes
Mid-sized holes are about the size of doorknobs and are best patched with stick on mesh patches. Clean the wall surface and sand it for a good tooth. Then, put the patch over the hole and apply two or three thin layers of joint compound. If you get a setting compound for the first layer, it will speed up the drying and layering process.
