Painting Kitchen Cabinets – A favorite project of our Syosset area customers

Painting Kitchen Cabinets

Painting kitchen cabinets is a decision that should not be made on a whim. There are a lot of considerations that you must think about before embarking on this project.

3 Takeaways about painting your kitchen cabinets for Syosset area homes:

1. Painting your cabinets is a time-consuming job that can be accomplished with the right materials & lots of patience.

2. Having CertaPro paint your kitchen cabinets will cost less than replacing them but is still not an inexpensive project. Repainting cabinets in an average Syosset kitchen costs approximately $215 per item (door, drawer, cabinet side).

3. Customers tell us that painting their kitchen cabinets with a modern color (usually white or off-white) had the single biggest impact on freshening up their home’s look and feel.

Before you paint your kitchen cabinets think about these things:

For Do-It-Yourselfers:  How much time do you have to paint your kitchen cabinets?

To “Do It Yourself,” painting your kitchen cabinets will take you about 4 weekends to complete. Read our DIY instructions and the products we recommend. Go slowly, this is a project that rewards patience.

Hiring CertaPro Painters to Paint your Kitchen Cabinets

If you hire a professional painter (like CertaPro Painters), we can complete the job on average 4-7 days. We do our best to keep your home as livable as possible, but painting kitchen cabinets requires emptying all of the cabinets and draping the rest of the kitchen in plastic. You’ll need to think about getting takeout on these nights!

Spraying Kitchen Cabinets

Often we take your drawer faces and cabinet doors directly to our warehouse and spray-apply the paint to them there. Spraying gives them a smoother finish than rolling or brushing, although, with the right formula of paint, rolling and brushing can result in a smooth finish as well.

We also mask off your cabinets and kitchen to spray-apply the coatings to the exposed portions of the cabinets.

Consider the rest of your home: If you paint your kitchen cabinets, what else in your home will suddenly look outdated?

Think about wall colors, window treatments, and furniture. If they are all meant to match with your old cherry cabinets, these furnishings might need to be changed after you paint your cabinets another color.  Our color consultant can help you choose a kitchen cabinet color that coordinates nicely with your furnishings, so you don’t need to buy new curtain panels because your newly painted cabinets clash with them – this is a free service to all of our customers with a signed proposal.

Frequently Asked Questions About Kitchen Cabinet Painting Projects

Is kitchen cabinet paint different from “regular” wall and trim paint?

Yes, we use a special primer and paint that are much more durable than regular wall paint because your kitchen cabinets will be opened and closed often. See our DIY instructions for the exact paint brands and formulas we use and recommend.

How much will it cost to paint my kitchen cabinets with CertaPro Painters?

While every kitchen is different, the average kitchen cabinet repaint project costs just $215 per item. This price is significantly less than refacing or installing new kitchen cabinets. If you’d like an exact quote, email [email protected] to set up a time for us to meet and give you a firm price or even send pictures of all the cabinets you’d like painted and we’ll send you a quote using photos.

What colors are popular for kitchen cabinets?

In the Syosset area in 2021, our most popular kitchen cabinet project is painting wooden oak or cherry cabinets white or off white. White cabinets seem to give our customers the most flexibility and provide a timeless look.

In 2021 so far we’ve also use varying shades of warm gray and muted colors to kitchen cabinets.  Muted shades of blue and green look fabulous and lend a “designer” look to kitchen cabinets.  Our color consultant is free to work with and can help you achieve your “kitchen cabinet vision.”

Lately, some clients have had us paint their bottom cabinets a different color than their top cabinets. Some even have us paint their kitchen island a different color than the cabinets to add some style.  Painting a darker color on the bottom cabinets tends to “ground” the cabinets or island in the rest of the room nicely.

Painting the inside of kitchen cabinets – do or don’t?

Painting inside of solid-door cabinets

We can paint the inside of your cabinets and drawers, but this will add to the cost. Insides of your cabinet doors are generally included in our quotes, but most of our customers tend to leave the inside of the solid-faced cabinets, inside shelving and inside of their drawers unpainted, to save money since none of these elements will show unless the door or drawer is opened.

Painting inside of glass-faced kitchen cabinets

While many customers choose to leave the inside of their solid-door cabinets unpainted most do paint the inside of cabinets that have glass doors. This way, when you see inside the glass door, you will see the newly painted color.  If you are thinking of adding a pop of a different color, some of our customers have used the inside of the glass-faced cabinets as a subtle place to do this.

Should I buy new cabinet door handles and hardware?

Choosing new hardware with the same “footprint” as the old hardware is best. This means if your old hardware fits in 2 holes, 4 inches apart, the new hardware should fit in the old holes. While we can putty up the holes to accommodate hardware that doesn’t neatly fit into the old holes, the puttied-up holes will end up showing as indentations in the doors as the paint cures.
