How much will it cost to paint my house?
The cost is determined by what we are painting. We take measurements of rooms, for example, and determine how much prep work is needed, and then what components are to be painted, walls, ceilings, baseboards, etc. We have a very savvy software program that calculates the cost once we input the dimensions and components, and number of coats. Trim typically is the most expensive part of painting because it is the most labor intensive. The same approach is taken with exterior components.
Is there anything that can change the cost of a project after a customer receives a quote?
Not often. The proposal has a section to list optional items for different scenarios if the customer is considering different options. However, if the scope of work changes it could change the cost of the project.

How do I find a good house painter?
Here is a list of things to consider when hiring a professional house painter:
- Call at least three different contractors for a bid – and be home for the initial meeting with them. A house painter should take the time to assess the job. Even the most experienced painter will need more than just a quick walk around your home. Be sure to ask each painting contractor about the size of his crew and the members’ experience level.
- State your expectations. The number of coats a painter applies is not the only factor in determining the quality and price of the project. Preparation is also key. If you want a surface that’s free of unevenness from past paint jobs, tell the contractors and be prepared to pay extra. If you can live with some imperfections, agree on what level of prep is acceptable.
- Get estimates. Seek a written estimate from each contractor. It should include the number of coats of primer and paint, the brand and model of materials along with a detailed description of the prep work that will be done.
- Check online reviews and references. Get a list of references from each contractor and call them to find about their experience with the pro. A history of positive references is a good sign. Be sure to look at their online reputation as well. Online reviews are also a good place to find how the business handles customer complaints! You will likely see a small number of less than favorable reviews. You can’t please all the people all the time so it all about how the pro handles any issues. - Consider credentials. Verify whether the pro has the appropriate license(s). You will find the licensing information for your state on the Contractor’s License Reference website. Also, check with the Better Business Bureau or the attorney general’s office in your state to learn whether the contractor has a history of unresolved complaints. Be sure to get a copy of the painter’s liability and workers’ compensation insurance certificates. If they don’t have coverage, as the homeowner, you could be liable for any accidents, for example, the crew drops a ladder on your neighbor’s car, or a crew member falls off a ladder and is injured.
- Look for a guarantee/warranty. The painter should promise to correct any chipping, peeling, blistering, that occurs within two years after the job is done at no or little cost. If you are told the paint itself has a warranty, remember that doesn’t include labor.
- Hold out. Finally, don’t pay the whole bill upfront and withhold a portion of the payment until you have checked that the job has been completed to your satisfaction. Typically, you can expect to pay 25 to 50 percent of the total job cost upfront.
Should house painters have insurance? YES! Reputable and professional house painting companies should carry insurance to protect themselves, their workers, and you! Be sure to get a copy of the painter’s liability and workers’ compensation insurance certificates. How do I choose a paint color for my project?
There are numerous ways to select the right paint colors for your project. You can and get ideas online by visiting websites like Pinterest or Houzz or visiting your favorite designer’s blog on sites like HGTV or the DIY network. Another way is to look at homes in your neighborhood, are there any color combinations that you like? You can also use the CertaPro Painters MyPaint Colors visualizer.
Do you offer color consultations?
Here at CertaPro Painters of Spartanburg, we offer color consultation services at no cost if you have a signed contract for us to do the painting. This is a great way to get professional advice and be sure you are choosing the right color combination for one of your most valuable assets.
What should I do to prepare for the painters to start my job?
If your job is an interior project, we ask that you move anything that is fragile or has sentimental value. In addition, we would also need you to remove any electronics from the walls and move anything that contains water (like a fish tank). Your painters will move and cover furniture as needed.
If your job is an exterior project, we ask that you make sure your cars are not parked in the driveway near the painting because a significant portion of exterior painting is done by spraying. If you are getting a deck or porch stained/painted, we ask that you remove any items that may be on it. In addition, we ask that you trim any large bushes close to the house, so they are not in contact with the siding. If your brick or masonry siding is being painted, it is helpful pull back 2”-3” of mulch from the siding so that it may be properly coated.
How often do I need to paint my house?
There are many factors that go into how often a house needs to be painted, so there is no simple answer. A good rule of thumb is to paint every 5-10 years. However, some things that can affect this timeframe are the type of siding, the quality of the previous paint job, the climate, and whether you are painting or staining the surface – just to list a few.
Is there a warranty for painting on the interior/exterior of a house?
Yes, CertaPro Painters offers a limited 2-year painting warranty for all vertical surfaces. Horizontal surfaces, or any surface by the virtue of its design allows moisture to collect, are not covered. A copy of the warranty will be provided.
How is payment handled?
We don’t require any payment until your project is complete and you confirm the job was completed as agreed to in your proposal. Once completed, the balance is due in full. You may give a check (made out to CertaPro Painters) to your painter, or if you prefer, we also accept E-check and credit card (transaction fees may apply).
