Prepping and Painting a Craftsmen Style Bungalow Built in East Haven in 1918

In 1918 some lucky person walked through the front door of this unique and charming home as the first owner. The President at the time was Woodrow Wilson, the flu at the time was the Spanish flu and East Haven was a seaside suburb of New Haven looking forward to the end of World War One. Now, at just over its 100 year anniversary, this lovely home was in need of a full exterior re-do.

With lovely trim details, a front porch, overhangs galore, and beautiful stonework you seldom see any more, this house might not be a mansion but it’s certainly an iconic example of the Craftsmen style Bungalow that was peaking in popularity around 1918. The owners struggled to find just the right color combination, but in the end, they settled on a dark blue with white trim. The resulting high contrast look makes the trim really pop and is a modern pairing that works on this venerable house.

Before work started…

You can see that the house was beginning to need help, the exterior had a layer of grime forming on it, some wood was fully exposed, the trim was nearly in danger of experiencing rot and before any of it got out of hand the homeowners chose CertaPro to come in and turn the situation around.

Homes of this style traditionally are painted darker colors or colors found in nature.

One of this home's highlights, here it shows the traditional craftsmen bungalow overhangs.

Not much wow-factor at the entrance.

It wasn't bad, it just didn't really pop all that much. With a porch as nice as this we made sure it would.

More to the trim than you might think

More to the trim than you might think

The trim on the house was a primary architectural feature and with this much wood detail, the invitation for rot is always there.

While the work was ongoing…

Much scraping and priming were in order so that the next coat of paint had the right surface to adhere to and would last a long time even with East Haven’s tough hot and cold climate and proximity to the ocean. Below you can see how some of the paint was literally flaking off the shingle exterior.

It's always in the prep work

Priming as needed, working around stonework, on 100+-year-old siding, great care was taken.

Caught in the nick of time

Here you can see the previous paint job was just crumbling off, this is a spot that required extra attention.

No area left unattended.

No area left unattended.

Even with the "second floor" on the front being just a large dormer the same level of care was given to it as the rest of the house.

When the paintbrushes were finally set down for the last time…

You can see that the results are dramatic. Any threat to the exterior has been dealt with, the exterior is clean, the trim has been protected and the curb appeal has been restored to better than 1918.

The color pairing here is so high contrast that the window framing and trim work leaps off the dark blue.

Neat as a pin and quaint as ever.

The end result is a good decade worth of interesting contrast paired with great stonework and trim.
