Prepping and Painting a Tudor Style Home in Meriden CT.

Known simply as “The Castle” this home in the Bradley Park area of Meriden is one the finest homes in the city. Built in 1930, this Tudor style home has an exterior that’s mostly brick and it’s paired with a slate roof that gives it a very classic look.

Having recently changed hands, the home’s new owners set out to make sure it remained in great shape. With a great deal of wood trim and visible wood framing amidst all the brick there was plenty of prep work to do. Some of the wood detailing was hand carved, some of it had dowel pegs driven into the surface and other features such as the downspouts and window frames were metal.

After a careful assessment the prep work began and in some cases the existing wood had to be both replaced and “re-pegged” in order to preserve the original details of the home. At the same time the owner was having sections of the slate roof replaced. To add to the complexity the home also had surfaces finished in stucco that had to be prepped separately to ensure there were no cracks or leaks.

When the prep work was completed the house was repainted but with a choice of colors meant to replicate the original  look rather than transform it in any way. As the painting and roofing were finished the home looked virtually identical to the day it was first completed.

Before Work Started…

You can see the downspouts shown in white that were eventually painted a much darker shade to match the woodwork. Some of the wood details are even visibly warped.

When the Prep and Painting Were Completed…

You can see that the results are fairly subtle but the intent was to protect the house and keep it looking the way it was originally intended to. With the exterior freshly clad in a barrier against rain, snow, and sun fade this classic home is securely set for another decade of use.
