Drywall Repair Fundamentals in Ottawa
Drywall repairs are an extremely common request we hear among customers. A lot of home owners may try to patch the hole themselves but we highly advise calling professionals to do it instead. It can be more complex than it seems and you don’t want to end up with a bigger mess than when it started. However, if you still decide to go ahead with a DIY drywall repair, keep these things in mind:
Be cautious of cords: If you need to cut into the wall to repair, first confirm that there are no plumbing or electrical lines behind the wall. You can do this by cutting a small surface hole (only an inch) and shinning a through so you are able to see. Once you know it is safe, you can cut deeper into the wall.
Less is more: Applying a thing coat will make the area much easier to sand.
Don’t rush through sanding: You may be tempted to quickly sand the area but it will be noticeable and you will have to go back and fix it anyway. Once you are ready to sand, use fine-grit sandpaper. Sand, apply another layer of mud, wait for it to dry and then re-sand.
Protect yourself: The particles that are released from the drywall are damaging to the lungs when inhaled. Make sure you are wearing a mask.
