  1. Power wash your exterior – while this step isn’t necessary every year. You should try to power wash the exterior of your home and/or deck every so often. By removing dirt and debris before increased rain and snowfall you are protecting your paint and the surface underneath. If grime sits on the exterior surface for a long time it can erode into the paint or sealant and damage the surfaces underneath. CertaPro offers all types of power washing services just in case you don’t want to DIY.
  2. Clean out gutters – before the winter months come it’s very important prep by cleaning out gutters. When gutters are clogged they can’t efficiently do their job which is removing water away from the home. Also, with debris in the gutters and water or snow on top it makes them heavier and more likely to fail. By cleaning them out each year you are keeping them working great and lasting longer.
  3. Make any repairs – as you make your way around your home, you might notice some items or areas that need repairs. CertaPro can help with light carpentry, stucco, and drywall repairs. By addressing these problem areas you are protecting your home from future, longer lasting damage.
  4. Check for leaks – you’ll want to look both on the interior and exterior for water and air leaks. The most common areas are doorways and windows. The weather stripping might need to be replaced on door frames or windows. You might also notice that windows aren’t sealing properly. Another place to look is near fireplaces and air vents. By prepping these areas early you’ll be saving money on heating bills. Also, blocking out any leaks keeps your home nice and cozy.
  5. Look Over Walkways – this one is definitely important. You don’t want to trip over cracks in cement, loose stairs or root overgrowth when they are covered in snow or ice. Double check all the walkways around your home and be prepared to address any concerns. Also, trim back trees and shrubbery that is touching the house or roof. This way you are preventing any unnecessary damage from snowfall or abrasion.
  6. Finish Up Home Improvement Projects – you don’t want to leave any home projects unfinished for the winter months. If you have started a DIY project that you’re not sure you can finish, CertaPro could help! Leaving a project unfinished could make it even harder to restart once the temperatures warm up. It could also cause damage and unneeded stress if surfaces are left unfinished.
  7. Put Items into Storage – If you have lawn equipment, outdoor toys for kids or pool stuff, you’ll want to make sure those things are safely secured in indoor storage. For winter months, utilizing the garage is a great option for storage. If you want to protect your garage from chemical leaks, tires or moisture you could consider doing a floor coating. The team at CertaPro can help you pick which coating would be best for your space.

Fortunately, winter doesn’t last forever but if you follow these tips you are setting up your home for a successful season. You will also be taking the necessary steps to protect your home and your investment. If you need any help prepping your home with the steps above, reach out to CertaPro NW Metro at 763-420-0228
