5 Reasons to Repaint Your Cabinets
Posted on April 1, 2022
Repainting cabinets can not only save you money but extend the useful life of your cabinets. Many times we get tired of the look of the cabinets long before the cabinets actually fail. Repainting cabinets can provide them with a fresh, clean look without the significant expense of replacing them. Today, we will discuss five reasons why you might want to repaint your cabinets.
Resale Value
Repainting cabinets often makes sense when the time comes to sell. To a buyer, many times dilapidated cabinets are a sign of neglect, so they tend to reduce the offer by the cost to replace them. However, cabinets generally last for many years if they are well maintained, so often, a fresh coat of paint creates the illusion of new cabinetry.
Give the Kitchen a Clean Look
Generally, most of us love a clean kitchen. Old kitchen cabinets, especially natural or synthetic wood grain textures, can make a small kitchen seem dark. Why spend thousands of dollars to replace kitchen cabinets when they need brightening up? These cabinets are perfect candidates for repainting, or, depending on the style and material of the cabinets, you may want to just replace the doors and hardware.
It Has Been a While
Regardless of the paint, you use or the technique, eventually, the cabinets will need repainting. In most cases, you can expect a 10-15 year lifespan of the project. If more than 15 years have passed since the last repaint, it’s probably time. The most important element is full coverage of the paint.
Except for the doors, kitchen cabinets tend to be built from medium density fiberboard (or MDF for short), which is very stable. MDF will absorb moisture even from the surrounding air, so it is critical that any exposed MDF be sealed. For cabinets with light scuffs or blemishes, repainting the cabinets will not only improve the appearance but add years of life as well.
Get Organized
Most of us tend to add items to our cabinets, but when was the last time you removed something permanently? Over time we tend to accumulate so many kitchen items that we can’t find what we already have. Repainting your kitchen cabinets forces you to get serious and remove the clutter. You might be surprised to discover how much space you actually have when you get organized.
Help Out the Environment
When we replace our cabinets, we have to rid ourselves of the old ones. Many old cabinets get partially recycled, but some old cabinetry ends up in a landfill. Cabinets take up space, so the fewer we throw away, the better off we’ll be. Repainting your existing cabinets eliminates the problem, as well as adding many years of useful life.
