Exterior Painting

Is Winter the Ideal Time to Paint your Home’s Exterior in Northwest Florida?

Posted on May 10, 2023

When repainting the exterior of your home or other property, there are several things to consider, including whether to hire the job out or DIY, finalizing a color scheme, checking out the various brands of paint and plenty of other decisions. A vital consideration before beginning your painting project is to be certain the timing is right for the substrate and climate.

Most people think of spring and fall as the right time to paint the outside of your home, which is correct, unless you live in warm, temperate regions like Northwest Florida.

In Florida, the ideal time of year to paint is in winter, or anytime between October and March.

Reasons to paint in winter:

  1. Ideal curing temperatures: Paints will dry, or cure, best at the temperatures which are most often experienced during these months (ideal is 50-70 degrees). According to Consumer Reports, be certain that it is 50 degrees and not forecast to drop near 40 for at least a few days afterward so that optimal drying occurs.
  2. Less humidity: During the winter months there is less humidity in the air, which also helps with curing and will leave your paint without cracks and unsightly stains.
  3. Less windy: It will be less windy during the winter season, so you will have a more even finish to the paint project.
  4. Sunny skies: The sun is usually shining during the Florida winters, but not “baking” so your paint dries and cures naturally and evenly.
  5. Not as rainy: There are less downpours and chances for hurricanes and storms that halt painting projects.

As you see, winter is the optimal choice for any home painting project in Northwest Florida.
