Much of Painting is Preparation

Every job is a little different, but most jobs require prep steps for a good end result. When you get an estimate, the painter should communicate to you what prep work will be needed, and how much of the job will be allocated towards prep. Prep for painting could include wood replacement, power washing, sanding, priming, and project planning.  If you have any concerns about what needs to be done, or what times of day the painters will be working – be sure to ask the estimator early in the process.

Types of Paint Products Used

The type of paint used can have big effects on how long the paint lasts or how durable it is.  The type of paint is only one consideration (oil vs latex),  most commercial painters will have a preferred product manufacturer. Both oil and latex paints have varying levels of quality of product that can have vastly different prices per gallon.  It’s important to know what kind of paint will be used, and what the options are for the project. A good commercial painters will be able to provide a recommendation that meets the requirements on both durability and the project budget.

Scheduling the Project

With commercial projects, scheduling is usually a main point of discussion with the building manager / owner and the painting company. Painters should be able to get most projects done with minimal disruption to the day-to-day operations of the business. This is done via planned and thoughtful scheduling and coordination.  Crews can work off-hours or weekends to minimize disruption for office buildings. Talk to your estimator about what an optimal schedule would look like for your business. Most painters will work with you to meet that schedule.

Project Timeline

Commercial projects often come with a schedule of how long the project is estimated to take, and what what work will be completed on each day. You should have a fairly good idea of when the project will be completed, with contingencies for rain days or bad weather.

Responsibilities

It’s important to understand what party is responsible for what task to avoid confusion or delays in the project. If you have a tight budget, completing some prep work with your own employees is sometimes an option. Thing like moving furiture or doing some of your own repairs can help reduce the price on the quote. Ironing out these types of details early in the estimate process is important, your estimator can discuss with you what the options are.
