Glastonbury’s western border is the Connecticut River, and it is just southeast of our capitol city of Hartford.  Rich in history, there are over 150 Glastonbury homes built before 1800, the second most of any town in the nation.  Most of the colonial era homes are in the historic district surrounding Main Street.  As the population grew newer homes were built, radiating out from the colonial area into the areas of Addison and Buckingham.  Over the past 30 years the areas of South Glastonbury and East Glastonbury have seen tremendous growth.  South Glastonbury is the home of several orchards and boasts many beautiful views of the Connecticut River Valley and the Hartford skyline.  Glastonbury residents and their neighbors from nearby towns can enjoy shopping, hiking, wildlife watching, and many other activities.  Glastonbury has a little bit of everything, including a strong population of rattlesnakes!

Wood Siding

Many of Glastonbury’s homes have either cedar shingles or cedar clapboard siding. Benjamin Moore’s historical color collection is a very popular color palette among our Glastonbury customers. Whilst wood siding provides great charm and beauty, it does need to be regularly maintained.

Mold and Mildew

These pesky microorganisms tend to take hold a little sooner on Glastonbury homes than the towns further inland. We recommend pressure washing your wood siding with a mold- killing solvent. It is also a good idea to regularly trim the plant life on the shady sides of your home in order to allow them to dry out faster.

An overabundance of moisture does create rot issues as well. Our carpenters repair rotting wood on over half of the homes we paint. It is very important to never paint over rotted wood. Not only will the paint fail to adhere, but the rot never stops spreading. It is best to remove the rotten areas and replace with fresh wood.

PVC or Wood

The most common wood replacement areas are your trim boards. Many of our customers elect to replace any rotten trim boards with PVC or Azek trim. While it is more expensive, you will not have to replace it again. To help keep costs down, we leave the non-rotted wood in place and repair only the boards that are rotten. Today’s synthetic trims are available to match many historic molding styles, so the replaced trim will not look any different than the wood we do not need to touch. If you plan to put your home on the market soon, it can be more cost effective to choose less expensive wood materials to replace your boards.

Aluminum Siding

Glastonbury homes built from the 1960s to the mid-1980s tend to have aluminum siding. Most people do not realize it, but aluminum siding is a great surface to paint! Over time the protective coating on aluminum siding breaks down and turns to dust (or chalk). This is a good sign, as the coating is taking the beating from the sun, rain, and salt air instead of your home’s structure. However, it eventually needs to renew that protection. We can pressure wash and scrub off the chalkiness and apply two coats of top-quality paint. Your siding will be refreshed, and you can expect ten plus years of life out of your new coating. Aluminum does not experience the moisture pitfalls that wood has which means extra longevity for the paint job.

Vinyl Siding

Homes built in the mid-1980s to present day in Glastonbury are often sided with vinyl siding. Like aluminum siding, vinyl siding is another great surface to paint. The one difference is that we need to be careful with the color chosen. Selecting the same color or lighter is perfectly fine. However, painting your siding with a darker color than the original may cause the siding to buckle. The darker color will absorb more heat than the siding was designed to handle. Sherwin Williams does have a family of vinyl-safe colors that allow some leeway in choosing darker colors. These colors are formulated to dissipate the heat from the sun.
