Learn How to Paint Your Ceilings

Posted on December 19, 2019

Are your ceilings looking dingy or stained? Or do you just want to add dimension to your room?

Either way, painting your ceilings can be tricky. If you decide you want to tackle this project on your own follow the steps below to ensure the process goes as smoothly as possible!

1. Prep the Room for Painting

  • Make sure to repair any cracks or holes that may be on the ceiling. You will need to patch, spackle and repair before you begin painting.
  • Remove any dust or dirt that may have built up on the ceiling.
  • Remove or cover any furniture and décor from the room to avoid it getting splattered in paint.
  • Turn off the power by using the breaker and then remove or cover any ceiling fixtures. This will help ensure the paint job is as neat as possible.
  • Cover the floor with cloth and protect any doors or windows.
  • Tape off the tops of the walls with painters’ tape.
  • Lay out all of the supplies you will need.

2. Begin Painting

  • The ceiling should be the first thing you paint in the room.
  • Invest in an extension pole to help you reach higher spots.
  • If your ceiling is textured, you will want to test out a small portion of the ceiling to ensure the texture doesn’t fall off. If it does, you will want to spray paint the ceiling instead. Use ceiling paint instead of wall paint.
  • Make sure to roll both directions, straight lines are best.
  • The most effective way to paint ceilings is to do it in grid sections. This keeps the edges wet.
  • Depending on your personal preference you may need to apply a second coat.
  • If there is any drips or splatters keep a rag handy so you can wipe it quickly.
