All About Neutral Colors 101

Posted on December 28, 2021

The definition of neutral color is; a color without much intensity or saturation. It is also a color which generally goes with every other color. Imagine colors like tans, beiges, ivories, creams, whites, blacks, and grays. These shades are very visually quiet in interior rooms. These colors recede into the background of rooms and spaces.

Neutral colors blend in to become the backdrop for your designs within the room. These colors are visually pleasing and easy for eyes to process.

Here are some examples of why using neutral colors is important.

Neutral Colors Are Easy on the Eyes

Neutral colors are easy on the eyes. They are visually pleasing because they do not fire up neurons in your brain. In contrast, are red colors. Reds are strong colors that make you feel energetic. On the other hand, it’s sometimes exhausting to see too much red.

Similar to red color, all the other strong colors cause unconscious reactions in your mind. Neutral colors do not behave like that.

Neutral colors smoothly blend into the background and create a sensation of restfulness. Neutral colors lack saturation so it takes no effort for the eyes to observe them.

Neutral Colors Do Not Interfere with Design and Decorations

Neutral colors are critical for painters, designers, and interior designers. They are friendly to the other colors. And they complement other colors by creating room for them. A well-chosen neutral color creates depth. This makes your space look bigger, and more vivid. This is especially useful in interior design. Stronger colors do not have this effect. In interior design, a neutral color is a common choice for background color.

Neutral Colors Blend Powerful Colors

Textures and patterns may come with strong colors. At first, you may love these stronger color combinations. But they will become overwhelming quickly and take over your space if no neutral colors are added to the mix.

Your mind can only handle so many colors at a time. You need to give the eyes peace by looking at neutral colors.

Neutral Colors Are Timeless

Color trends are nothing new. They come in and fade away quickly year after year. If you choose a trendy color, you are giving a date to your design. Which means it will  eventually become outdated. So, the solution is to create a timeless neutral background, then add pops of stronger colors with accent walls or other design accessories.

This makes it easy to update and change accent colors without having to repaint the entire room.

Also, strong trendy colors are not for everyone. Someone loves it, someone hates it. A neutral color, on the other hand, appeals to almost everyone.

Increase Resale Value of Your Home with Neutral Colors

As discussed above, neutrals are colors that are usually accepted by everyone. Using trendy or wild colors will turn off potential home buyers because they will see the work they will have to put in to repaint the property, rather than the home’s overall look & quality. However, neutral colors allow potential buyers to have a clean palette to create however they like & no repainting right away.

Neutral Colors for Shading and Depth

Artists can use neutral colors to create an illusion of shadows and distance. Darker or lighter neutral colors help create a realistic-looking lighting effect. To create an illusion of depth, artists paint the item in the distance with a less saturated neutral color. You can also utilize these effects when designing your home with color.
