Interior Painting Standards – Quality Levels

At CertaPro Painters® of Maine we offer transparent tiers and clear pricing so you know exactly what you’re getting. For some people, the highest quality level is important for their enjoyment of their home or business. Then for a majority of customers, the “middle of the road” option is the best blend of professional finish balanced with the overall cost of the project. And finally, for properties that see high wear and tear, maybe just getting a fresh coat of paint is all that matters. The following are FOUR LEVELS of interior painting that we offer. And yes, your sales associate will be happy to mix and match criteria from the various levels to meet your preferences and budget.

Level 2: Apartment Repaint

  • Covers all the essentials. Major flaws are fixed to make the space presentable.
  • Major ceiling cracks, water damage, and other major flaws are fixed.
  • Structural cracks in walls are filled with tape and compound. Major holes are filled.
  • Patches that are the most rough are sanded in preparation of paint.

Level 3: Standard Residential

  • All major flaws and most minor flaws that can be seen at a glance are addressed.
  • Any nail pops that have broken the surface of the walls or ceiling are repaired.
  • Major holes in eye-level trim are filled if they can hold filler.
  • All trim is sanded with 100 grit sandpaper to knock off burrs.
  • Visible cracks between trim boards, and cracks between walls and painted trim are caulked.

Level 4: Upgraded Residential

A clear upgrade from our standard residential paint project, this level focuses more heavily on attention to detail. We make your interior space look brand new by fixing many flaws that have been overlooked for several paint jobs, including:

  • Smoothing out major “waves” in the ceiling and uneven patches on the walls from previous spackling jobs.
  • Properly addressing both major and minor stress cracks by “digging them out” and repairing them for long-term durability.
  • Sanding of the walls and trim to give a perfectly smooth and even appearance throughout the room.
  • Caulking cracks between walls and trim, especially those harder to see, such as beneath window frames.
  • Removing old paint from window glass.
  • Skim coating door panels that are alligatored, leaving them with a smooth finish.

Level 5: Interior Decorator Standard

This level will satisfy the most detail-oriented perfectionist. Only the highest quality paints are used with a minimum of two coats. In addition to the benefits of Level 4, this standard includes:

  • Smoothing out even minor “waves” in the ceiling.
  • Fixing bowing drywall.
  • Sanding all walls with a vibrating sander for an ultra-smooth finish.
  • Skim coating window sills for a glass-like finish.
  • Using a detail electric sander to reach intricate trim profiles.
  • Repairing damaged windows, doors, and trim using a 2-part epoxy, molding it to match existing patterns.
  • Attempting to remove old paint from hardware and vinyl windows. We recommend brass refinishing or hardware replacement (additional cost) if the hardware is too damaged.

CertaPro was great to work with. Elias and his team worked magic on my house and had the job complete in short order. The paint job was neat and clean, and looks great! They also did some needed carpentry repairs before they could paint. Elias is a skilled carpenter and did excellent work. All-in-all a great experience. I would recommend CertaPro to everyone.

Changes That May Impact Cost

When it comes to cost, nobody likes surprises. That’s why CertaPro Painters® of Maine will never surprise you with an additional charge. We will always share how a change or addition will impact cost and ask for your approval before starting work. Listed below are the most common changes we encounter.

Additional Time to Prepare the Room

  • Do your part to have the house ready when the painters arrive.
  • We typically ask that you remove pictures, fragile objects and electronics before we arrive. Curtains, shades furniture can be discussed with your Sales Associate.
  • Leaving preparation like this to our painters adds time and labor costs to the price of the project.
  • We are willing to do as much or as little "work area preparation" as you need, just communicate with us beforehand.

Changing Products

  • Changing paint manufacturers or products may impact your project cost due to material availability or the relative cost of the preferred product.
  • Changing products BEFORE your project begins is best. We will only charge you the price difference between the old and new product.
  • Changing products AFTER your project begins requires an additional cost of materials and labor, especially if we've already purchased your first chosen product.

Changing Colors

  • Realizing a color isn't what you wanted after seeing it on the wall is common.
  • Ask us about product samples and test swatches to try before your project begins.
  • We can always change colors after the fact, but we need to charge for the additional labor and material.

Choosing Deep Colors

  • Deep colors are bold, but often require additional coats of primer or paint to look even.
  • Consider that changing to or from a deep color may involve additional costs because of extra coats.
  • If you prefer bold colors, ask us if we think an additional coat will be necessary. We will always communicate cost up front.

Additional Rooms & Paint Coats

  • Sometimes customers propose additional rooms, surfaces, or details not initially covered in their proposal.
  • Consider that everything from accent walls, to additional coats can add cost.
  • We are happy to make any of these changes. Just ask your Painter or Sales Associate and we will let you know how your request impacts the overall project cost.
