Sheen & Color Options

Sheen: How Shiny the Paint Is

  • Flat finishes are the best at hiding flaws and are the easiest to touch-up.
  • Semi-gloss is the most washable finish, but it is hard to touch-up and shows off the most flaws.
  • An eggshell finish is a good compromise between the two, especially for walls.
  • When viewed at an angle, a high sheen finish can alter how a color is perceived, due to the reflection of more light.

Ceilings

  • Flat finishes are common because they hide flaws especially well.
  • Ceilings are typically white or slightly off-white to give a more "spacious" feeling.
  • For a more dramatic look, ceilings can be painted in medium or dark shades.
  • In rooms with dark walls, a lighter shade of the wall color on the ceiling helps the ceiling from being too bright.

Walls

  • Walls are typically eggshell for most rooms, as they are easy to wash and colors remain clear.
  • Avoid dark colors on walls that will need regular washing as streaking may occur.
  • Ask about SCUFF RESISTANT paint for high wear areas… and yes, it really does make a difference!
  • Kitchens benefit from highly washable satin finishes, and mildew-proof paint is ideal for bathrooms.

Trim

  • Semi-gloss is the most popular finish since it is the most durable and highlights the trim.
  • Satin is also very effective and can provide a more subtle look.
  • White or off-white is typically the standard. However, medium or dark shades can give a more dramatic effect.

wallpaper removal contractors

Wallpaper Removal & Surface Preparation

The best way to deal with painting an area that is covered with wallpaper is to completely remove the old wallpaper, prepare and prime the walls, and then repaint. Wallpaper removal and the preparation of the walls is charged based on time and material. The process includes pulling off the paper, removing the glue, spackling the walls, sanding the walls, re-spackling, resanding, and then priming.

We typically estimate a rough range so you have some idea of what the charge will be before we start. This is only an estimate – sometimes the paper comes off easily and with minor preparation, while other times it is a painstaking process in which we have to chip it off inch by inch. If the process is difficult, we spend additional time preparing the walls to repair any major scrapes that resulted from the removal.

Specialty Items

A note about Morocco or Calcimine coated ceilings:
These ceilings may have hairline cracks and pealing. Unfortunately, these ceilings will inevitably fail and start to “fall”. The only way to ensure that this problem is permanently corrected is to totally strip this coating off and start from scratch. This may be cost-prohibitive. The next best solution is to remove the pealing areas, skim coat and sand them, then use a calcimine recoating to smooth over the area. This is a quick fix for the problem, but it is not a lasting solution. When you are ready to invest in a completely new look, our team can help you strip the old surface and paint it like new!
